Three Years Ago...

"Look, all I'm saying is, when someone is this late they probably aren't coming." Amelia gave Damon a look, who still remained hopeful. "Which means we still have plenty of time to make reservations somewhere."

"I'm beginning to think this is less about Candice visiting, and more about my cooking." Amelia rose a brow, purposely using the knife she was using to point at him.

"What? No." He quickly shook his head, holding his hands up. "I love your..dish, it's my favorite..." His eyes searched the counter top of ingredients, his face going blank. "What are you making again?"

Amelia rolled her eyes. "Casserole."

"Casserole!" He clicked his fingers, as if it had been clear to him all along.

The doorbell rang before anything more could be said, and Damon made a face, groaning. Because of something she needed to take care of, Candice had temporarily split off from travelling with Stefan and Valerie, and told Amelia she'd come visit while she had the chance. It wasn't that Damon was apposed to it, he and Candice got along better then they had in the past, now that Amelia was back in their lives. But they still bickered, one of them always capable of saying something to annoy the other.

Placing the knife down, Amelia made her way over and opened door, blinking in confusion. Like expected, it was Candice there waiting, but there was someone else. A girl, who looked no older than two, resting carefully on the hip of the youngest Evans sister.

Seeing the look on Amelia's face, Candice gave a sad smile. "It's a long story."

"What's with the rugrat?" Damon raised a brow, as Amelia let them inside.

"Her name is McKenna." Candice corrected him. She carefully placed the young girl down on the couch, who looked at the three three curiously. It was clear she didn't know what was going on. "Valerie had a lead on a witch, who might be able to make some more of that paste for Stefan, in case Rayna ever got free of the Armory. When we got there, it was...bad." She said carefully, glancing over at McKenna. "They were all dead, bodies drained of blood. The vampire who did it was dead, they'd clearly took him down with them. She was the only one left." McKenna's small hands began to tug on the blanket on the couch, giggling to herself as she managed to pull it over her head. "Someone had hid her in closet. Stefan picked up on her crying."

"Oh God." Amelia let out quietly. "Is there no one she can go to?"

Candice shook her head with a sigh, running her hands through her hair. "We did as much digging as we could, trying to find someone to take her. That's how we got her name, we found her birth records. There's no other living relatives." She explained. "That's why I've brought her with me. I'm going to come up with a story and drop her with the cops, or someone who will see she gets put somewhere that will take care of her. We didn't want to just leave her there until the cops arrived."

"Here." Amelia pushed a glass of wine in front of her sister. "You look like you could use this."

Candice let out a dry chuckle. "You have no idea."

"I think we have some juice she can have." Amelia then said, opening the cabinet to find a suitable cup for McKenna to use. "Do you want us to come with you? Help you come up with a cover story?" She offered. "I'm sure Damon to can compel away any questions that can't be answered."

"That would be great." Candice said with a nod. "Stefan and Valerie were going to come with me to help themselves, but we thought it best they keep going and I meet up with them after."

"Makes sense." Amelia nodded, grabbing the juice to pour McKenna some.

As she turned back toward where her sister sat, she noticed something over Candice's shoulder, which made a smile tug at the corners of her lips. Raising a brow, Candice turned in the chair she sat in, her eyes falling onto what her sister was watching. Damon was knelt in front of where McKenna was on the couch, pulling silly faces at the girl, which made her giggle every time she poked her head out from under the blanket. After a few moments, Amelia walked over and joined them, holding the cup out to McKenna who looked at her shyly.
