CHAPTER 2

We exit the store, bags in hand. I settled on a 'slimming' bathing suit that is purple with white polka dots. Jane’s is lime green with ruffles at the top.

We walk to Jane’s mom’s car, and I get in the backseat, with Jane following.

“No.” Jane’s mom says to us.

Oh no. Is she going to kick me out?

“Get in the front, Jane. I will not chauffeur you around.

Jane smiles at me apologetically, and climbs into the front.

The ride home is awkward, at least until Mrs. Doan makes an announcement.

“Jannis, I do not know if I am going to allow you to go on this trip. With only her with you, anything could happen! Maybe I shall come with you. I do not wish for some boy to take advantage of you, and with that child around, my trust is simply nonexistent.”

“MOTHER! First of all, Mel is IN THE BACKSEAT! Secondly, you already said we could go! I have pepper spray, I will not be taken advantage of! You never trust me!” Jane yells.

“Jannis, dear, it is not you I do not trust. Melinda was raised in a way I do not approve of. If she allows someone to take her home, or into a public restroom even, other men will think that it is okay to do that to you! I do not want you to become pregnant!”

“I WILL NOT GET PREGNANT IN A PUBLIC BATHROOM, MOTHER!”

”You never know with girls these days, Jannis.”

“Well, you should know me, your daughter! You should know that I’m better than that, and so is Mel!”

Rebecca Doan looked at her daughter. “I must rethink my decision as to whether or not to allow you to go on this trip of yours.”

                “UGH!”

I try my hardest not to cry.
