Chapter 1

I Thought He Said...

As I started walking back I heard a lot of people crying. Every house I passed I heard cries. Parents hugged their children and mumbled things in their ears. I started to pace faster towards the Village. I heard people scream. Then I began sprinting. I stopped when I saw a teenage girl slam open her door. She dropped a small locket on the ground. Then she threw a torch on it. It burst into flames. I gasped and sprinted even faster. I heard cried and screams.

"What...? I thought he said once I won I could live my life in peace. I fought and I won. I thought he said..."

"Let's not try to think about it right now. We have a whole year," she sniffled. "Let's just try to be happy now..."

But I couldn't be happy. This was anything but happiness. I am being reaped again. I remember the day I was reaped. My whole body shut down and my breathing went faster. I know it will happen and I guess I will have to prepare. I am just so mad because... I thought he said...
