"Here," I said, handing her a cup of coffee.
"Thanks," she mumbled, her eyes never meeting mine. She's embarrassed. And hurt. And I don't like seeing her like this. Her eyes are red and puffy, she has yet to change out of her school uniform, and her eyes are...empty. She turned her phone off after Gin called her for like the tenth time and she's just been sitting on my couch. I've never seen Kagura like this before and it scares me. But I have no idea who to call, who would know what do to. I would try Kamui, but after what her father said to her, I'm not sure she even wants to see him right now.
"I'm sorry Sougo," she sighs. I look back at her. She looks at me and gives me a tired smile.
"No," I say firmly. She furrows her eyebrows in confusion. "You of all people are not allowed to look like that. You do not get to give up Kagura. Your father in an ass. Not gonna lie. I don't like him. But just because he thinks you're not good enough, does not mean he's right. You're going to pick yourself up and you're going to make him wish that he had been able to find a partner half as good as you. So, do not give me that broken smile with sad eyes. It's not allowed."
"Wow. I think that's a first," she laughed.
"Huh?"
"I think that's the first time I've ever needed you to give me a pep talk," she said. I shrugged and looked away, feeling a bit embarrassed. It was true. I was not one to do pep talks. Frankly, it was out of character for me, and I didn't even know where that came from.
"Thanks," she said, looking a bit happier. "And you're right. He is an ass. And I'm going to show him that I am going to be the best of the best! And you're going to help me!"
"Me?" I said in mock surprise. She grinned.
"Don't act like you don't still practice swordsmanship. I've seen you and even though it pains me to admit it, you're good. And since you want to be a police officer, I'm assuming you're well versed in hand to hand combat. Plus, it's been a while since our last match. So, you game?"
"What? Right now?" I asked and she rolled her eyes.
"No! I'm not fighting in my uniform! It'll crinkle and then Otose-sempai will get her panties in a bunch and blah blah. Nope! We're starting tomorrow! Crack of dawn before school starts!" She chirped. "Sounds good to me," I said. "Now, can we order a pizza? I'm starving!" Laughing, she hopped up from the couch and said, "You know my order! I'm gonna go freshen up!" She gave me a quick peck on the cheek before bounding away. I smiled and whipped out my phone.
As I suspected, I had about twenty missed calls from Kamui and practically twice that much in texts. He'd heard about what went down and he was panicking over his sister. I sighed, knowing he was going to yell at me the minute he answered the phone, but oh well. I should probably let him know she's ok.
Cringing, I called him back and waited. It rang once before, "WHERE IS MY SISTER!?!"
"Jesus Christ! Do you have to scream?" I yelled.
"Where. Is. She?" He asked, lowering his voice.
"She's in the bathroom, cleaning up. She's stopped crying for now and we're about to order pizza," I sighed.
"Why didn't you answer my calls sooner? I'm coming over!"
"No!" I said.
"No?"
"No. Her father basically just told her that you were better than her. I don't know if she wants to see you right now." Silence. "Just give her a bit to cool off. It's not your fault. You'll see her tomorrow anyway. Why don't you go be with Nobume for tonight?"
