Your name: Quail
Side notes: You're the brother to Carnelian, taking place right after her death
-----------------------------------------------------
Wrong place, wrong time. You haven't even been to Jade Mountain for a day, and yet, everything seemed wrong. Your sister, Carnelian, had been killed in some kind of freak accident. An explosion, cause unknown... or unsaid. Her body was so charred, she was almost unrecognizable. As bothersome as all of this was, somehow the thought of your dead sister wasn't the worst part.
It was that NightWing that tried to guard the door.
You didn't think anything of it until later. How did she know something was going to happen? Did she set it up? Was she working with someone?
Why did Carnelian have to die?
It only got worse then on. Since Carnelian was gone, and you'd only just arrived, the Dragonets decided it was for the best if you went into the Jade Winglet in her place.
And that's where you met the NightWing. The first thing you noticed about her were the odd silver teardrop scales by her eyes. They almost seemed to shimmer in the light. The thing was, no NightWing that you can remember had scales like that.
How come no one else has them? You questioned.
You might've imagined it, but out of the corner of your eye, you could've sworn you saw her turn her head away after that thought.
The other members of your Winglet annoyed you to the core. The RainWing always babbled happy nonsense, the SandWing was too nosy, the SeaWing was too polite, and the IceWing was almost as bitter as you were. The NightWing at least could stay quiet and not bother you. And that's exactly what you wanted. For now, anyway.
But the questions from earlier never left your mind. What did she know about that attack from earlier? How did she know? What if she was involved, somehow? I'll find out soon enough, NightWing. You thought bitterly towards her.
Out of the corner of your eye, you could've sworn you saw her flinch.
By the time night came and everyone else was asleep, she had been in the library and returning to her cave. Then you stopped her in her tracks. "You spend a lot of time reading, for someone who seems to know everything."
She jumped away, nearly screaming. "WHA-"
She stopped, finally spotting you and sighing in relief. "Oh, it's you. You're... Quail, right? Carnelian's brother?" She flashed a smile. "I'm
Moonwatcher. But call me Moon."
"Alright. Then tell me, Moon," You paced closer. "Why were you guarding that door? And don't play dumb, you know exactly what I'm talking about."
Moon almost looked surprised, but ended up sighing, shaking her head. "I-It's not what you think it is." She said. "Is that so? Because I think you were in on it. That's the only way you'd know about it." You instinctively clenched your claws into a tight fist.
"No! I-I didn't try to kill anyone!" Moon cried, her wings flaring. "If I was really in on it, why would I try and keep others from going in there?"
"Selective targets. Less casualties. I know how you NightWings are." You narrowed your eyes at her.
At this point, Moon seemed very offended. "Just because some of us lied doesn't mean others of us are just as bad. You're judging me based on the other NightWings." She looked away. "Even Carnelian wasn't as quick to point the finger as you..."
"Don't speak of my sister. Just tell me what you know. Why you were guarding that door?" You internally shattered at the mention of Carnelian, but decided not to show it. "Well, you're her brother... maybe you deserve to know. But you have to promise that you won't tell anyone else, and that you'll believe me." Moon turned her gaze to meet yours. "Promise me."
"Okay." You nodded. "Fine."
"Thank you, Quail." Moon flashed another sweet smile. "Because it's going to sound very crazy..."
"Can't be crazier than you being in on the explosion itself." You shrugged. "But you'd better tell me the truth." You added quickly. "Okay, okay. You see these?" She pointed to her silver scales. "You don't see these on anyone else, do you?"
You shook your head. So they are important.
"That's... because I'm a bit different. The myth about NightWings reading minds is true, because I can do it. And... maybe see the future." Moon explained.
A long moment of silence came between you and her.
"You can't be serious. Those myths were proven false, everyone knows that." You said, forcing yourself to stifle a chuckle. There's no way she's telling the truth with me. I knew that NightWings were just a bunch of liars. "Now tell the truth. How did you know about the door?"
"That was the truth!" Moon insisted. "I know it's not really believable, but I can really read minds, and see the future! That's how I knew beforehand, because I got a vision telling me-"
"A vision, hm? Was your 'vision' from another NightWing? Maybe the other one who was in on it?" You demanded, pressing it further. Some part of you wanted to believe her, but you smothered it down, obviously it wasn't true. She looked around frantically, as if she was trying to find some place to escape to.
Then Moon stopped, took in a deep breath, and then met your eyes with a pleading look in hers. "I can't convince you to listen to me, but I had no reason to kill Carnelian, or even be in on this. Somewhere, you know that. If you let me, I can prove that I can really do those things." The words struck you before you could even think about staying strong. That's how you knew she was right. Sighing, you backed away, shooting her an expectant look. "Fine. Prove it." You said.
Then she held out one of her claws. "I-It's stronger this way. Hold my claw."
So you did.
Her scales felt cold. There was a light tingle that shot up your arm from her cool scales. You turned your attention back to her, and found that she had closed her eyes. It looked like she was focusing hard.
This is stupid. Why am I even trusting her? I should be getting to the bottom of who killed Carnelian. Not holding the claw of some NightWing that's a little bit attractive.
Moon snorted, letting go of your claws as she blinked a few times. She looked shocked. "You think I'm attractive?" She asked.
"Wait, you..." You couldn't even find words. So the legends were true! NightWings could read minds!
And yours got you in a bit of a situation.
"U-Uh, no! That was... um, a test! Yes, a test, to see if you really were telling the truth." You cleared your throat, hoping to regain composure. Moon didn't look convinced. "Uh-huh. So, do you believe me now? I can really do these things, that's how I knew. I tried to tell Carnelian... but she didn't listen. I just wanted to stop anyone else from going in after she did." There was a hint of guilt in her voice, as if she'd blamed herself for what had happened.
You sort of felt bad for her. "... Well, you did exactly that. I suppose I should apologize, it was pretty unfair of me to blame you. But I just wish you would've stopped Carnelian, too."
It seemed, for a second, that the comment really hit Moon. Her face twinged into a bit of a hurt expression, but it was quickly replaced by something else. Sympathy, spread across her face. "Quail... I'm so sorry. I wish I could've done more, but I-"
"Save it, Moon. I already don't blame you. Shouldn't that be enough?" You couldn't bear to talk about this, about Carnelian, any longer. You turned away from Moon, set on heading to your cave.
"It's not enough if you're not okay." Her voice called after. Finally having enough for one night, you went off to your cave, blinking back the tears in your eyes. You felt weak, and you know Carnelian would hate you if you cried. You laid down on the rocky floor and closed your eyes, set on nothing but sleep. Sheltering yourself with your wings, you thought about nothing but your dead sister. Maybe they'd come pick up her body soon. Maybe then you'd get answers.
Sometime during the night, you swore you heard a set of talons outside of the cave entrance. You knew who they belonged to, but you didn't want to face her. Not now. Maybe not ever again.
Sleep came to you soon enough, but your last thoughts weren't about Carnelian or the killer.
They were about that special NightWing.

P.S.
I'm sorry to everyone that's been waiting on this book, other stories of mine, or just roleplay for so long. For a while, I lost the will to really make any stories, take part in anything creative on Wattpad. Instead I just wanted to be a ghost. Now, I feel as though I can make some stuff again, but nothing too... much. Roleplay might take a while to get back into. And obviously I've deleted other stories for a reason.
But, for now, I'm ready to start making stuff for this story yet again. So, for those who were waiting, thanks for staying. For those who read now, it helps me keep doing this. I'll do as much as I can to do requests.
Thank you all.
