a/n: not going to lie, this is inspired by "Goodbye Love" from Rent. yes, I am musical trash. anyway, enjoy!
It was raining in Wakanda.
The usually azure blue sky was gray, and for once, all of the city lights were out. The rain cast a dreary atmosphere over the setting, but it was fitting, for today was T'Chaka's funeral.
That was why you returned. When you received the hologram from the Dora Milaje, you abandoned your mission and traveled to Wakanda. The palace was uncharacteristically quiet. The only sounds were hushed whispers and soft cries. Your heels clicked against the floor as you walked towards the casket.
You peered down at T'Chaka, the man who had led your country for all of your life. The man who you had defended, followed, and fought for. You grew up in the palace, so you had been relatively close with T'Chaka. You had always known him as a kind and caring king. His death was so sudden.
You placed a pink carnation into the casket atop of the hundreds of other flowers given to T'Chaka. They formed a kaleidoscope of colors, like wildflowers growing in a field. While you were on your mission, some of the local children in the village had told you that pink carnations meant "I'll never forget you," and you could never forget T'Chaka.
You looked at him. His eyes were closed, and his arms were crossed over his chest. There was a hint of a smile on his face. You concluded that he was at peace.
You turned around and looked at the people around you. You hadn't seen these people for years, you barely recognized them. You felt like you didn't even know them anymore.
You slipped out of the palace, unnoticed. You figured you would travel somewhere else, maybe in Africa, maybe in Europe, and find another mission to complete. You were walking through the empty city streets when a voice caused you to stop in your tracks.
"(Y/N)?"
That voice.
You could recognize that voice anywhere.
You turned around slowly. Sure enough, you were face to face with T'Challa. You were a fool to think you would be able to avoid him on this day.He looked more shocked to see you than you were. "(Y/N), you came."
You nodded. "Yeah, I did."
There was a long silence as you two stared at each other. He had changed drastically since you last saw him. He was paler, thinner. There were bags under his eyes, and his posture wasn't as straight as you remembered. You swallowed roughly. "How are you holding up?"
"How do you think?" You forced a laugh, but he didn't smile. "Where are you going?"
"I have to leave Wakanda. I have to find another mission."
"Same old (Y/N), trying to save the world." He sucked in a breath. "(Y/N)-"
"Stop." You held up a hand, cutting him off. "I know what you're going to say, and I don't want to talk about it. Not today." You could tell by the look on his face.
"Well then, stay, and we can talk about it tomorrow."
Your shoes sunk into the wet ground. "I can't stay. I only came to pay my respects to T'Chaka, that's it."
"You left me, (Y/N)." His eyes were glossy, as if he was reliving it all. "I woke up with a note from you on the bedside table saying that you were breaking up with me. I had to hear from Okoye that you left the country on a spontaneous mission."
You lowered your gaze. "I know I went about it the wrong way. I just had to leave."
"Why? Why did you leave, (Y/N)?" He stepped closer to you. "Why did you leave me?"
Your lips parted, but no words came out. How were you supposed to explain that he was content with ruling Wakanda, while you wanted so much more? How were you supposed to explain that if you had told him you were leaving, you knew he would've convinced you to stay? How were you supposed to explain that the second you laid eyes on him, you knew you would break his heart, or that he would break yours? How were you supposed to explain when you didn't even know where to begin, didn't even know why?
A single tear streamed down your cheek. You hoped the rain concealed it. "I just came to say goodbye love."
He stepped forward and reached out his hand to touch you, but you pulled back. "Please don't go." You were leaving him all over again.
You shook your head. "I just came to say goodbye love." Now you weren't sure if you came to say goodbye to T'Chaka, or goodbye to T'Challa.
"You hurt me, (Y/N)." You expected to see anger in his eyes, but they spoke the words he couldn't say. But I still love you.
You pulled out another pink carnation. You placed it in his outstretched hand. He examined the delicate flower with curiosity. Raindrops spotted its petals.
I'll never forget you.
"Goodbye love," you smiled sadly, "goodbye."
You turned around and walked away, leaving him alone. That day, it rained in Wakanda.
