Chapter 4: Her Voice

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lily stood up, her eyes carefully watching as the boy started to walk towards her. It was ironic to see that this boy has come to a masquerade ball but didn’t have a mask on.

'Well he had nothing to hide' Lily thought bitterly.

As she eyed him Lily felt nervous; this boy, it seems like he is wealthy because of his clothing, she prayed he didn’t come here to scold at her for taking a simple break from the ball inside. As the boy got closer, she looked into his eyes. The boy had gray eyes, the same gray eyes that had been watching her the night before. Those were the same eyes that kept her awake most of the night; those were the eyes she thought were beautiful and held power yet kindness in them. And those were the eyes that made her not run away-this time.

'Could this be the same guy', thought Lily.

“Good evening, my lady”, the boy said bowing slightly “What are you doing outside?”

“I came to get some fresh air, sir it was getting pretty warm inside”, replied Lily, as to emphasize her point she blew out a breath and fanned herself with her hand.

“Oh please don’t call me Sir, I would much prefer Kaine if you may”, asked Kaine.

'Kaine?' Lily frozen 'Have I ever heard that name before somewhere?' she racked her brain for an answer.

“Yes sir……I mean Kaine if that is what you wish”, replied Lily bowing her head.

“So…um…I didn’t catch your name”, asked a curious Kaine.

“Mmm…well…I don’t think I throw it”, Lily smirked crossing her hands over her chest.

“Well then will you throw it at me, I would love to know the name of the girl with the beautiful voice”, said Kaine with a big grin on his face.

“It was you”, whispered Lily to herself but Kaine had heard. “Of course, I was completely amazed at how your voice was when you sang. I was just walking around when I heard your voice. It just made me want to stop and follow it. Then I saw you but your cloak was hiding your face but the wind solved that problem” Kaine explained.

“Wow, Kaine you just made yourself look like a stalker, she’s going to think you are weird”, Kaine murmured to himself.

Lily brought a hand over her mouth and tried not to giggle “No I don’t think you are a stalker or weird it just seems nice that you think that” Lily laughed. Kaine looked at her then joined in. When they both quieted down, a relaxed air rose between them.

Kaine coughed “Can I ask you something…um…?”

“Lily”

“I beg your pardon?”

“My name is Lily” she clarified with a smile.

Kaine blushed lightly “Lily” Kaine said as if he was testing the name and its beauty.

“I like it, it seems like a good name for someone who is beautiful as you are with a striking voice”, Kaine winked.

Lily flushed pink and couldn’t look at Kaine; she knew that if not for the mask on her face, he'd see her blush.
