The room was silent for a whole hour whilst Dawn and Kara watched 'high school musical.' Then Kara spoke.
"Hey Dawn, I hope you don't mind me asking, you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but do you remember where you got that necklace?" Dawn looked down at it. A sadness filling her. "It's only because I remember when I was younger, my aunt got me one like that too for one of my birthdays and I left it behind when I came to Earth. It just reminds me of home that's all." Kara said, slightly nervous for her reply.
Dawn took a deep breath. "My sister used to make them. It was the only thing that made my mom happy. She hated us and we hated her but one day she found one of them and at first we thought she was gonna be mad because we were using her stuff but instead she asked us to make one for her." Dawn was maddened just at the thought of her mother.
"What did she do with it?" Kara asked, suspiciously.
"I don't know. I never saw her wearing it." Dawn shrugged. "However, one night I heard her saying she was gonna use it for something... she was gonna give it to someone to make her look good."
A million theories ran around in Kara's head. "Why didn't you like your mom?" Kara asked her, hoping not to upset her.
"She was evil. A murderer. She was the best mother until one day, something changed in her. I thought she was going crazy. She said that she needed to kill people, to blow up buildings just to keep us safe. Our whole area was in on it. But me and my sister refused. There was no way we were killing anybody. Mom was embarrassed by this and so... she disowned us. Hid us away and pretended we didn't exist." Dawn made no eye contact with Kara. She was looking down, fiddling with the blanket which was over them both, trying to control her anger.
A terrifying thought ran through Kara's head which she tried to dismiss but it wouldn't pass. So she asked her. "Dawn... what was your moms name, do you know?" Kara's voice was shaky.
"Astra." Dawn said in disgust and slight embarrassment. Her mom was a well known criminal on the whole of Krypton.
Kara was shook. It couldn't be. She told herself. Astra didn't have any kids, that's why she loved me so much. I showed her what it was like to have a daughter. Kara had an idea to make sure that what her head was telling her wasn't true. That the girl that crash landed only 3 days ago was the daughter of her aunt.
"Could you come back to the DEO for a minute, I need to show you something." Kara said standing up and turning off the tv, her face screwed up in confusion.
"Okay..." Dawn said, confused on why Kara's mood had now changed and the fact that they were both now in their pyjamas.
...
Kara flew them both in. Dawn still wasn't properly aware on how to use her powers yet. Winn turned around to see them both in their pyjamas and laughed.
"Wait were we suppose to be having a slumber party or something?" He joked, only him finding it funny.
"What's a slumber party?" Dawn asked him. He went to explain but Kara cut in front. "Mon-el, I need to speak to you." She demanded, grabbing his arm and pulling him aside, out of earshot of Dawn who was listening to Winn teaching her about different types of parties.
"What's wrong are you okay?" Mon-el was concerned.
"I know it's gonna sound silly at first, but..." she sighed, still trying to make sense of it all, "I think she might be my cousin."
Mon-el gave her a strange look. "What? Kara that's impossible." He said, trying to calm her down.
"Yeah that's what I thought at first but think about it. She said her mom hid her away. That she was that ashamed of her for not wanting to be evil. Then earlier she told me that her mom wanted to blow up buildings to keep people "safe". That's exactly what my aunt did. And her name was Astra."
Mon-el was now also convinced. They both looked over at her, joking around with Winn. "There's a way we can find out."
"How?"
"The hologram of your mom, she looks like your aunt right? Let's see if she recognises her." ...
