***RECAP***

“Mama, stay awake. Keep talking to me. Okay?”

“I’m fine, Soph. I’m fine.” She grunted and tried to shift her body but couldn’t move.

I got up and tried to pull Lady off of her. She wouldn’t move. The horse was hurt too. I spoke to the horse softly and tried to coax her and get her up. But that wasn’t working either. I didn’t want to leave Mama’s side, so I went back to her.

“Help is coming Mama.”

Mama smiled at me once more, then coughed and rolled her head to the side. And stopped breathing.

Chapter 7

“Mama no! Please stay awake! It won’t be much longer!” I begged, looking down at Mama. I took her hands in mine and held them. I shook her. I gently slapped her cheeks, I’d do anything to get her to wake up. I tried mouth to mouth again over and over, a countless amount of times. Nothing was working.

‘Where is Sheriff Dawson? He needs to hurry up!’ I thought. ‘He told me to keep Mama awake!’

Panic really started to set in now.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed Sheriff’s number again and again, and got no answer. I hope he is almost here.

“It’s okay Mama, soon we will be back on our horses and riding home like none of this ever happened!” I said, though she couldn’t hear me. I said it to comfort myself more than anything.

As if on cue, Mama started breathing again. I don’t know how, it must have been a miracle!

Mama! Can you hear me? Are you alright? Her eyes weren’t open but at least she was breathing. This calmed me a little, but she was still pinned and not responding to anything I said. I took her hands in mine again and used my thumb to brush her sweaty knotted hair out of her face. Mama had a lot of natural beauty. She rarely wore makeup, unless it was a special occasion. She must have really taken care of her skin when she was young. I can see why Papa fell for her, as for him; there isn’t one thing to like about that heartless man.

We were having such a good day today! How could this happen? Everything was going great, no worries, just spending time with the most important person in my life. I hadn’t been this happy in so long!

I looked down at Mama again. She was practically lifeless, but breathing. I was just hoping she could be awake and okay, but she wasn’t. My eyes were drawn to my poor excuse for a father’s hand print on her face. I wondered when it would heal. The bruise seemed to only get darker.

I was suddenly furious with my father! If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have been too scared to be home today, we would have never gone out riding, I wouldn’t have told Mama to take this trail, the horses would have never gotten scared, and we would all be just fine!

This was all my fault. I just had to have my phone on full volume didn’t I? Stupid me. I hate myself right now. Gracie snorted from behind me and stomped her feet. She was getting impatient.
