Chapter 4 – Nate
“I got to admit that I’m really liking the scenery here at college,” Nate said, looking appreciatively around at all the ladies who were walking the other way down the sidewalk past him and David. “It’s almost enough to make a guy wish he was single. Almost.”
“I wouldn’t lead with that when you see your girlfriend for the first time in almost a week,” David said.
Nate laughed. Then he said, “Wait, please don’t tell her.”
David shook his head. “You never change little brother. You should have seen Oliver last night. He’s takes after you. A bunch of girls from across the street came over to watch us wrestle. He was loving it. Then I left him alone for two minutes with that Aurelia chick and when I came back he looked like he had just lost his virginity. Apparently the kid can’t even keep it together for a two-minute conversation with a girl.”
“What about you?” Nate asked. “You’re single. You’re the big wrestling stud on campus. When are you going to hook up with a chick here? At least one of us should see what the college girls have to offer.”
“And with that romantic sentiment in mind, there’s your girlfriend,” David said.
Nate followed his gaze and saw the most beautiful girl, inside and out, in the world. Trinity London was a living angel. Nate felt the customary moment of lightheadedness wash over him. He always felt that way at first whenever he saw Trinity.
Trinity ran up to meet him. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him on the lips. If he had known she would greet him like that after they had been apart for a few days he would stay away more often. No, actually, he really wouldn’t. He loved Trinity and he never wanted to be apart from her.
“Okay, that’s enough of that,” Bryson London, Trinity’s twin brother, said.
Nate laughed and let go of Trinity. “Good to see you, bro,” he said, shaking Bryson’s hand. “How have your first few days at the new school been?”
“Good,” Bryson said. “The soccer team isn’t as good as it was at Lakeville but maybe with Oliver and me we can turn it around.”
“Yeah, you’ll have to look out for him,” Nate said. “I wish that one of us was going to be in school with him but I’m the only one young enough and the PSEO route works better for my credits.”
“I’ll look after him as if he were my own brother,” Bryson promised.
Bryson’s relationship with Nate had completely transformed since last year when Bryson had hated Nate. Now they were actually friends. Well, they were as good of friends as two guys could be when one was dating the other’s sister.
“Thanks for meeting us at the gym,” David was saying to Trinity. “Nate doesn’t know his way around campus yet so I’m on the hook for being his guide. Unfortunately, I have wrestling practice so I didn’t have time to take him anywhere else.”
“It was no problem,” Trinity said. “Bryson and I used our iPhones to find it. We can take Nate from here.”
“Bryson, you’re welcome to stay and watch practice if you want,” David said. “People do it all the time. As an athlete yourself you might be interested in our training. We’re doing inter-squad matches today so it’ll almost be like going to a real tournament.”
Nate could have kissed his brother. He knew what David was doing. He was trying to provide Bryson with an excuse to give Nate and Trinity some alone time. Fortunately, the idea of watching a bunch of ridiculously fit men in singlets probably appealed quite a bit to Bryson.
Nate saw conflicting emotions cross Bryson’s face. On second thought, perhaps it wasn’t so fortunate after all that David had proposed watching a wrestling match. Bryson was still humiliated after he had been outed as gay at Lakeville High School. He was probably worried about the way it would look if he was seen watching the wrestlers.
“Reagan!” a guy called out as he approached the group. He was very athletic looking with dark hair and tanned skin. He clearly had at least some Asian heritage. “How’s it going? Ready to get dominated today?”
“Fat chance, Justin,” David retorted. “Hey guys, this is Justin Vang. Justin is a sophomore wrestler here. He’s one of the best wrestlers in the country. He’s almost as good as me.”
Justin laughed good naturedly as he shook all of their hands. Nate thought he sensed Bryson’s demeanor change. Bryson smiled shyly when he shook Justin’s hand and his eyes lingered over the guy’s body. Nate would have bet that Bryson found Justin highly attractive.
Sure enough, when David said, “Last chance, Bryson. Want to come watch?” Bryson answered energetically in the affirmative.
“Good man,” Justin said. “It’s nice to have spectators and David will need all the help he can get after I destroy him on the mat.”
“I guess that leaves me and you,” Trinity said as the boys walked into the gym. She hooked her arms through Nate’s. “What do you want to do this evening?”
“Ah, I don’t know. I just figured we’d sort of go for a stroll,” Nate said. He acted as nonchalant as he could manage. Inside, however, he could barely contain his excitement. He had planned a surprise for Trinity. She would either think it was incredibly romantic and give him a big kiss or she would laugh at him and still appreciate the effort.
