Chapter 1 – Aurelia

“You’re going to be good, right Aurelia? No fighting with Sadie today. Please? Let’s have one civil meal together.”

Aurelia looked over at Narupa. Who did the bitch think she was, scolding Aurelia as if a child? Hell no. Aurelia bit back the urge to tell her friend what she could do with her warnings. The fact was that Aurelia liked Narupa. The girl was the kindest, gentlest soul Aurelia knew. She was pretty too in an exotic way and Aurelia liked hanging around with people who, like her, had some racial diversity. Aurelia expected to stand out but being the only person with pigment in the pearly-white state was a bit unnerving. Aurelia even liked Narupa’s accent. It was fancy and regal like she was some sort of Indian princess or something. All that didn’t mean that Narupa could talk down to her, however. Aurelia was not above tearing that chick limb from limb to teach her a lesson.

For the time being, Aurelia decided it was best to let the moment pass and just ignore the warning. “Amy, you sure I was invited to this par-tay?”

“Sadie said you and Narupa were welcome to come, and it’s just a barbeque,” Amy said. That girl was definitely not a minority. Her skin was as pale as milk and her hair almost platinum blonde. Of course, she was extremely attractive. Aurelia wouldn’t hang out with girls who weren’t. To do so would be to risk a lower sexiness score for herself by association and that was simply out of the question. Amy and Narupa were both solid nines. Aurelia herself was, obviously, a ten. There was no question about that. Her mixed African American and Chinese ancestry had produced a gorgeous ebony skin tone, a slim body with curves in the right places, straight and shiny black hair, and almond-shaped eyes. Add the lithe muscle definition that came from her soccer training and she was unrivaled in the entire female student body. The attentions of the every straight male student in the school proved that. Every male, that was, except for one. Sadie’s boyfriend Aaron seemed to be under some spell that Aurelia had not managed to break. Well, not yet. It was really only a matter of time.

“I’m surprised she was okay with me coming,” Aurelia said. “It’s a mistake she’ll regret very soon.”

“Come on, Aurelia,” Narupa said. “Can’t we all just be friends?”

“Absolutely not,” Aurelia said, giving her friend a warning look. She was beginning to push the lectures too far. Aurelia could drop Narupa from the cool clique any time she wanted to. “Not until that freshman hussy stops scheming to get my spot on the team.”

“You know it’s not personal,” Narupa said. “Sadie just happens to play midfield like you. That’s not her fault.”

“It is her fault,” Aurelia retorted. “Little white rich girl thinks she can come in here and take my varsity spot – a spot I’ve earned over the past three years? I don’t think so. That’s my scholarship. Hell, that’s my man she’s got too. Girl, the star of the men’s varsity soccer team belongs to the star of the women’s varsity soccer team. Everybody knows that.”

Narupa sighed. “Well, Aaron Caldwell is very cute,” she admitted.

“Cute? Hell. You know why they call these here things eyebrows?” Aurelia asked, pointing to her eyebrows and imitating her 80-year old grandmother’s southern drawl. “Cause I be a eye-browsin that boy’s fine ass. Um-hum.”

Narupa and Amy broke out into laughter.

“What’s the occasion anyway?” Aurelia asked, dropping the accent.

“Apparently Aaron has a few brothers or cousins or something coming to live with him,” Amy replied. “I have no idea why they’re arriving in the middle of the fall semester but Sadie wanted to throw a barbeque so they would get to meet other people. Aaron invited some of the soccer guys and Sadie did the same with the soccer girls.”
