Chapter 10 – David

David liked autumn. The cool fall air reminded him of his cross-country running days and invigorated him. He didn’t feel like he was going to get heat stroke when he walked outside. He liked the colors too. The gold, orange, and red hues danced around him in the light midday breeze.

This particular autumn day was especially pleasing to David. In the course of one day he had gone from being single to waking up next to a gorgeous and exotic beauty. David hadn’t talked to Aurelia since she had walked out of the house but he assumed they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend now. How could they not be after what they had done the previous night?

David wondered if Aurelia and Sadie would be able to make up at their soccer practice. He hoped so. He didn’t understand why there was so much animosity between the two girls. He and Justin Vang would be competing for the starter position in their weight class and they got along fine. Why did Aurelia and Sadie have to be mortal enemies? They were both adults now; David had to believe that they would be able to overcome their differences. He shuddered when he recalled the lecture Sadie had given him after Aurelia had left. He had been thankful that Aaron had quietly removed all the kitchen knives from reach while Sadie was screaming at him.

“Hey stud muffin, heads up,” Nate called out.

David looked up and caught the football that was sailing through the air towards him. “Are you enjoying yourself?” he called back to Nate. Nate just grinned. He was taking full advantage of being able to tease his older brother about Aurelia.

“Hey Oliver, this one’s for you,” David yelled. He chucked the football over to Oliver. Oliver ran and caught it. He didn’t look back at David.

Oliver had been acting funny ever since the incident in the kitchen. David couldn’t tell if it had something to do with Aurelia or if the former foster child was simply uncomfortable with conflict at home. David wondered if Oliver could have developed some sort of crush on Aurelia and then dismissed the notion. They had barely spent two minutes talking together. It must have been the discord at home that was upsetting Oliver. David felt bad for the kid. He hadn’t had an easy life. David resolved to make even more of an effort to reach out to Oliver. He wanted his youngest brother to feel emotionally secure and able to confide in him.

As Oliver threw the ball to Aaron, David looked around. They were all outside in the college quad. After the tense morning with Sadie, Aaron had suggested that they go out and have some bro time. It had been a good decision. It was nice to relax and throw the ball around. This is what David had dreamed their time together would be like.

“How did Trinity like your surprise?” Aaron asked Nate as he threw the ball to him.

Nate smiled evilly. “She loved it,” he said. “Do you really want to know how much she loved it?”

Aaron shook his head. “You can keep the tawdry details to yourself,” he said.

“Wow, tawdry, that’s a pretty impressive word,” Nate said as he tossed the ball on to David.

“What can I say? I’m a college guy now,” Aaron replied.

“This is nice,” David said. “Just the guys. No girl drama.” He looked over at Oliver and, when he was sure the kid was looking, he threw him the ball. The spiral was a little sloppy and Oliver missed the catch. He scooped it up from the ground quickly.

“I’m surprised to hear that coming from our own little Romeo,” Nate said. “Are you saying you’re not going to rush off to see your Juliet as soon as we excuse you from bro time?”

“Are you going to avoid Trinity today?” David asked.

“Maybe,” Nate said. “But I’ll bet you’ll ruin bro time and talk to Aurelia first.”

“Fine, I’ll take that bet,” David said. “What’s at stake?”

“Loser does the winner’s laundry for a week,” Nate said.

“Done.” David knew that Nate couldn’t go an hour without communicating with Trinity. The entire past week they had been apart Nate had been texting her on his phone incessantly.

“Good. Turn around,” Nate said.

David looked over his shoulder. Aurelia was walking across the quad towards him with a very no-nonsense look on her face.

“Uh oh. That face doesn’t look like a happy one. I better call Sadie and make sure everything is alright,” Aaron said.

Aurelia walked straight up to David.

“Hey,” he said. “I didn’t expect to see you so soon. Don’t you have soccer practice?”

“Something came up,” she said shortly.

“Nothing to do with Sadie, I hope,” David said. Like Aaron, he feared the worst.

“Nothing you need to worry about,” Aurelia said. She seized the front of his shirt and pulled him closer to her. She kissed him.

David was peripherally aware that Nate was laughing at him but he didn’t care. He was much more interested in what Aurelia was doing.

Aurelia removed her lips and placed them next to his ear. “I was wondering if you were ready for round two,” she said. “I trust you’ve recovered from last night?”

“Of course,” David said quickly, not wanting to seem like he couldn’t keep up with the girl.

“Good,” Aurelia said. She took his hand and led him away from the quad. David could hear Nate hooting with laughter. He briefly caught Oliver’s eye but the younger boy rapidly looked away.

“Where are we going?” David asked as Aurelia led him toward the heart of campus. They weren’t headed back to David’s house. David wasn’t sure where Aurelia lived but he didn’t think it could be in this direction.

“You’ll see,” Aurelia said.

She surprised him by leading him up the steps of the library. She took him up several flights of stairs. When they got to the third floor, Aurelia turned down a long, narrow hallway. Halfway down the hallway she suddenly turned left and went down three small stairs and through a narrow doorway.

Beyond the doorway there was a small room filled with stacks of obscured reference books. Aurelia let go of David’s hand and shut the door behind them.

“This is like a secret little room,” David commented. He walked down a row of books. Around the corner of the stack he saw two empty tables. “There’s no one else in here.”

Aurelia walked up behind him. “Precisely,” she said.

David turned around to face her. Aurelia reached down and started unbuckling his pants

“What, here?” David asked, scandalized. “We can’t… um, you know… in the school library.”

Aurelia didn’t answer him. Instead, she unzipped his fly. When she reached into his boxers, David instantaneously became more receptive to the idea.

“Do you really want me to stop?” Aurelia asked seductively.

David shook his head. He put his hand on her cheek and kissed her gently. She returned the kiss passionately.

“Good, because I’m just getting warmed up,” she purred.
