Chapter 13

I walked through the threshold of my apartment with two things different: I had cut my hair, and I was now a proud owner of a two adorable gerbils.

"Remember to feed them, don't forget about Nancy." Brett was talking about my white mouse from when I was like nine.

"Um, if I recall correctly, you were the one who killed Nancy." I retalliated.

"And how did you come to that conclusion, huh?"

"You shut her in a damn book."

"Oh yeah," Brett wondeed into the kitchen, "I must've forgot."

I ignored his realisation and wondered back into my room where I set my new pets down in the middle of my chest of draws. All I had to do was name them, I had no idea. Consequently, I did the normal thing a person would do if they faced this situation... I texted my friends.

First up was Eloise, there really was no point in asking her because by the time she replied I would've probably already chosen their names.

So, next I consulted Joe. He proposed the idea that I should name them after a famous person or an inspiration. I ended up taking his advice and now my gerbils are called 'Dylan O'Brien' and 'Percy Jackson'. I should've gotten guinea pigs then.

I'm not obsessed.

Nonetheless, the pair set up camp in their straw bed and that strange wooden hut while I scrolled Instagram aimlessly because that's what I do when I'm bored.

"Happy Birthday Haley!"

Well, that was something to wake up to.

"Brett, it's only," I checked my clock before continuing, "8:23. Why do you have to wake me up this early?"

Don't get me wrong, I loved my brother but not when he woke me up early, even if it is on my birthday. "I only wanted to give you your present before you got ready for uni." he replied defensively.

"Fine, what is it?" I motioned for him to sit next to me on my bed so that he would be more comfortable. Brett handed me a card along with two presents, one of which I felt was a DVD.

"Open the card first." Brett indicated the black envelope. I did as instructed and rapidly ripped the top of the paper and clutched the card from inside. On the front was some cheesy sister joke which I cringed yet smirked at. As soon as I opened the card a millimetre, two pieces of paper fluttered out. I looked at Brett before overturning the pieces of paper to see that he had gotten me two tickets to go up London Bridge.

"Seriously?" I smiled at him before bringing him in for a hug.

"Yeah, I remember when we went when we were younger and you loved it, so I got you tickets to go again." My brother said proudly, "Now, open your other two."

I decided to open the DVD first and I was overjoyed when I saw a box set for teen wolf series six. I had been trying to find series 6B everywhere but I couldn't because it wasn't on Netflix or TV, but now I could watch it. I smiled at Brett as I reached for the small box. When I took the wrapping paper off, I saw that it was a little 'Essentials' earring box, I had been needing new ones for quite a while because I lost one.

"I have got an amazing brother, don't I?"

"Umm, of course you do." Brett pulled me into another hug before mentioning one last thing, "I got a reservation at Yo Sushi as well, only because its a blue Monday."

"Thank you, now get out, I need to get changed." I smiled as I watched my brother exit my room.

"Be ready at half-past seven!" he yelled back.

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful, apart from when my Professor tripped over and knocked a lambs heart off the table, the day was also boring because I did not have Eloise to talk to in class because she was casually in Scotland, you know, the usual.

Anyways, I got home and watched Netflix because I wanted to chill before I went out for dinner. Unfortunately, that didn't go to plan.

"Haley!" My natural instincts kicked in and I rolled my eyes. I paused B99 and diverted my eyes to the source of the sound which happened to be my brother. "Are you ready yet, we're leaving in five minutes."

At that moment, my blood ran cold. "Um, what?" I asked panicked.

"Yeah, it's twenty-five past six, we need to leave at half-past." Brett replied casually.

"No. You told me earlier, it was a seven thirty."

"Oh, did I?" He said amused, "Well I must've got I wrong earlier." and with that Brett left.

"Crap."

We were late, obviously.

We had a nice dinner, catching up on each other's lives and having some sibling time. The awkward bit was when the person who seated us thought that we were boyfriend and girlfriend and said "You two enjoy your date." I cringed so hard at that but luckily Brett stepped in and explained our relationship was siblings.

"Has Joe said 'Happy Birthday' to you yet?" Brett questioned.

"Um, is that a cow walking down the road?" I pointed out the window which then made Brett turn. I quickly shoved a piece of sushi in my mouth.

"There are no cows walking down the streets of London at one thirty in the afternoon." He turned back to face me

"Well what about at one thirty in the morning? Maybe there's a cult who ride cows down London streets in the witching hours." I suggested.

"Stop trying to change the subject, Haley."

"Subject, well today I had maths if that's any consolation." I turned back to my rice.

"Firstly, you had biology today. Secondly, you know what I mean so can you answer my question please?"

"So you see, the answer which I am about to give you is the same in multiple different languages and was my first ever word." I trailed off at the end.

"No? What do you mean no?"

"I mean no."

"Okay I understand, but why didn't he sat that to you?" My brother inquired.

"Maybe the fact that I didn't tell him contributed to him not saying those specific words to me today." I shoved more rice into my mouth.

"Why didn't you tell him?"

"Because it's stupid. It just marks another year of me having to put up with life."

"Dude," a small chuckling noise was made by Brett, "you need to tell him."

"Fine," I gave in "can we get the bill and go, I wanna see how this episode of my show pans out."
