“Thanks Kylie, this really hit the spot.” Mackenzie said to me as she was sipping her coffee from the seat across me. “No problem.” I said back as I did the same thing. “So I was thinking, maybe we could go out this weekend. And explore the new town; see what’s around here.” I suggested to her. She just nodded and smiled and continued drinking her drink.

When I got home I went straight to my room and laid on my bed thinking if I should call Matt. I knew he probably wanted me to but what if I called him and we have nothing to say to each other? I could hear Lewis’ voice in my head telling me to do it; it’ll be okay; so I did exactly that. I pushed the dial button and I heard it ringing, my stomach was doing miniature flips. “Hello?” I heard him on the other end of the line. “Hi.” I said. I totally forgot he didn’t know who I was so when he didn’t say anything I spoke up, “Sorry, this is Kylie.” I laughed. “Oh! Hey Kylie, I can’t believe you called.” He said back. That was weird, why wouldn’t I call him? “Well I did. Did you need something when you came by earlier?” I asked. I was stumped at why he came over and I was irritated he decided to when I was sleeping. “No, not really I was just gonna ask you something.” He said slowly as if I couldn’t understand him. “Oh, well you can ask me now.” “I think I’ll ask you in person. It’s better that way.” Now I was confused and eager as to know what he needed to ask me.

“Come over then!” I said and hung up the phone. I wondered if he’d really come over or call me back in a few minutes. He never did call back but within a few minutes o heard something hit my window. I jumped up really fast and searched for my bat I always had in my room, just in case. Another noise from my window and this time I went to it and looked out. There was Matt standing in my back yard throwing rocks at my window. I laughed and through the light from my porch and my bedroom window I could see him smiling too. I ran down the stairs and out my back door trying to laugh quietly. “Hey you.” He said. I waved and didn’t say anything. I could see his bruised face in the faint light of the moon; every time I saw it I cringed, wondering how much pain he had to go through. “Are you okay Kylie?” I nodded. “You have something to ask me?” he nodded this time.

                                                                                Matts POV

I couldn’t ask her to hang out this weekend. It seemed too soon and I wanted to get to know her more before I got into anything like that. So I wittingly made up a question that seemed legit. “What did we do in physics and English today?” she was smiling when I began to ask the question but by the end she seemed less than amused but she answered anyways and when she was done talking I nodded and thanked her. “Yeah, No problem.” She said and started walking towards her house. I didn’t want her to go but I knew there was no other reason for her or me to stay here. So just to end the night off on a good note I added, “I had a rough day, can I have a hug?” she turned around smiling. “There’s always something else.” She got to my side and gave me a hug but it was too tight and I winced from where my dad had kicked me and Kylie noticed, she pulled away “Oh, are you okay? What did I do?” she asked really worried. I held my ribs and tried to make the pain go away. “Matt!” she almost yelled. “What is going on with you lately?” I lifted my shirt and revealed where the pain was coming from. I had examined myself earlier that day and saw that there was already a bruise and it didn’t look pleasant. If it was on someone else I probably would have wondered what happened to them. “Matt!” she gasped. I looked at her sheepishly and she just stared.

I put my shirt down and said, “Say something.” But she didn’t, she just moved towards me and gave me another hug only a lighter one this time. “I’m so sorry Matt. That’s horrible.” I hugged her back thinking about what she was thinking about all this. “I have to go in but call me or something. Maybe we can hang out tomorrow if you’re free.” She said after a second of more hugging. I nodded and told her I would call her later and see when we could hang out. Then I walked home and thought about her eyes and how they looked so…sad. That’s all I could think about all night until I fell asleep three hours later.
