The rest of the day went almost exactly like the first half of the day and by the end I was sick of it. I was, although, excited because Matt was in two more of my classes! As the last bell rang signaling the end of the day everyone (not many I must add) crowded into the hallway. I hurried out to the parking lot and looked for my car. I remembered not to park it too far away from the exit of the parking lot or the school because otherwise I’d be stuck for a while. “Kylie!” I heard yelling behind me and turned quickly, thinking it was important. It wasn’t. “Hey Kylie!” Haile ran up to me and smiled. “Wanna go get some coffee?” she asked. I shook my head. “I don’t have any money right now, sorry.” I said trying not to sound like a loser. But the truth was that I really didn’t have any money at the moment. I had to loan my mom most of my money so we could move and I have yet to find a job here in Wisconsin.
“It’s totally cool I’ll lend you some money, just pay me back later OK?” she said in that slightly annoying high pitched tone. I winced slightly at it considering I had a headache. “I suppose I could for a little while but then I have to go home and help unpack.” My mom was getting home late tonight from her new job and my dad hadn’t made it up here yet. He was still selling the house down south and he needed to finish up some stuff too. My sister, therefore, was left to fend for herself for a while. She was only in the seventh grade and she was one of the people that had the roughest time with my brother’s death.
“Hey Kenz? I asked knocking on her bedroom door a few weeks after Lewis had died. I could hear her sobbing into her pillow, I recognizable sound the past few weeks. I slowly opened the door and went to her bedside. “Kenz, don’t cry sweetie.” I said trying to sound as motherly as possible. I had to of course because it’s not like my mom was there for us after Lewis died. She had to be there for herself and my dad had to be there for her too; leaving us girls to be on our own. “Why did he have to go now? What did he ever do wrong to the world?” she asked through sobs. She could barely catch her breath leaving her hiccupping and making her cry harder. I rubbed her back and tried to talk to her, which didn’t work. “I wish I could go see him, right now. I will.” She said trying to sound defiant. She got up and went to the bathroom where there were some old prescribed medicine and opened it really quickly and put them all in her mouth. It took me a minute to register what she was doing and it was quick enough to tackle her to the ground making her spit most of the pills out. “What are you doing??!” I screamed. “I don’t want to live here anymore! I want to see Lewis again!” she yelled sobbing and crying and screaming. I sat there and held her for what seemed like forever, eventually she fell asleep and I left her there on the floor with a blanket. That’s a day I’d never forget.
“Earth to Kylie.” Haile said to me. I hadn’t realized I zoned out for a second. I blinked a few times and snapped out of it. “Oh, Uh what?” I said stuttering. “I said I’ll pay for you today.” She said to me slowly. “Are you okay?” she continued. I nodded and nicely declined, figuring I needed to help Mackenzie at home. As I drove, I thought about what the rest of the year would be like here, it was my first day and I seemed to have made a few friends. Which was good, I wondered if that number would rise eventually. Matt did say once the people here got to know you they would be more friendly. I smiled slightly hoping for the best in the future.
As I pulled into the drive way at home Mackenzie ran out smiling, she looked like a little puppy that had been away from their owner for a long time. I laughed and got out of my car, carrying my bag with me. I ran up to her and gave her a hug and we did our handshake we made up after Lewis died. It was something that just kept us close and made us remind each other that we would be together forever. “How was your day little sis?” I asked, seriously interested in what she was about to say. “Well, it was weird, I didn’t make any friends but one and the teacher had to set us up so they don’t really like me.” She said with a frown. I sighed. “Well, there’s always tomorrow right?” she nodded slowly and looked up at me. She was a lot shorter than me, even when I was abnormally short, her green eyes looking at me expectantly. She was actually really pretty, unlike me she had light blonde hair and looked exactly like my father; I got my looks from my mom. “How about you Ky?” she asked. I couldn’t see how she was in the seventh grade; she always acted like she was in the third or fourth grade. “Well, I met a few people actually and,” I paused knowing she would love this part of the story, “I met a really cute guy.” We both were smiling and laughing. “Really? Is he cute?” she asked. I nodded and we started walking up the drive. “Mhm, he really is! But I’ll tell you about it later I’m starved. How about you?” she nodded and we headed to the house to go get a snack.
