Hiccup sent off the terror mail, watching the tiny messenger dragon speed off into the clouds. Behind him Snotlout whined once again about how hungry he was, and Hiccup massaged his temples, fighting to stay patient. "Snotlout, look- if you're really that hungry why don't you look through the supply bags? I know we lost most of the stuff when the dragons panicked and left us, but there should be something."
Snotlout groaned and complained, "I already looked! There's nothing but fire supplies and rope and stuff, no food." His stomach grumbled, and the stocky viking looked miserable. Hiccup sighed, fed up after dealing with Snotlout's whining for a whole day. To be fair, he really had thought they had food supplies, he had just wanted to conserve them.
"Why don't you go scout for any edible berries or roots? I can set up camp while you're gone- we might be here awhile before the others find us. I'm betting our dragons went back to Dragon's edge when they couldn't find us." Snotlout grumbled an agreement and stalked off.
Two hours later, Snotlout came back to camp, happily munching on a small pouch of berries. It was now dark, and Hiccup had built up a fire in between two sleeping bags. Snotlout offered some berries to Hiccup, but Hiccup politely refused, satisfying himself with some potato-like roots.
Late that night, Snotlout and Hiccup were sitting by the fire, drawing in its heat. Suddenly Snotlout grunted and pressed a hand to his stomach, an odd expression crossing his face. "Hey, are you okay?" Asked Hiccup, looking concerned. Snotlout shook his head, perplexed, and answered, "Uh, I dunno. My stomach just kinda started hurting all of a sudden."
Snotlout felt another wave of cramping pain shoot through his stomach, and the stout viking doubled over briefly, breathing hard. Hiccup frowned and got over to Snotlout's side, noting the sweat and pain visible on his friend's face. Suddenly Hiccup had an idea, "Snotlout, do you have any berries left?" Snotlout shook his head. "Well, what did they look like?"
Snotlout described them in between gasps of agony, shifting to lay curled up on his side. "They were... ugh. Small and um dark, like purple color. Ahhhhhgg. They looked like blueberries, but the tops were kinda different. I was hungry, I didn't pay attention." He whimpered and curled up even more.
Hiccup's heart filled with dread as he realized what kind of berries Snotlout must have eaten. "How many did you eat? Those weren't blueberries, they were Dragon Berries- very poisonous." Snotlout looked terrified, and Hiccup quickly added, "They're not deadly, there's just some pretty nasty side effects I want to keep an eye out for. I won't lie, you're in for a few rough days. I'll try to help as much as I can, but there's not really a cure for this besides wait it out." Snotlout moaned and threw up in the campfire.
