When morning came, Hiccup shook Snotlout's shoulder to wake him up, but his heart sank when the boy didn't stir. Hiccup tried every way he could think of to wake Snotlout, but the other viking was unconscious. Hiccup needed help, now.
Hiccup scoured the island for dry wood, piling it in a huge pile, then setting it ablaze. The smoke billowed up into the cloudy sky, and Hiccup watched it rise for hours.
Then suddenly, Astrid's dragon Stormfly touched down, along with Fishlegs and Heather. Hiccup hugged each of them in turn, the relief obvious on his face. Astrid pulled Snotlout onto her dragon, and Hiccup explained what had happened as they flew away from the island. Heather picked at her saddle and asked, "Is he going to be okay?"
Hiccup nodded, but he was worried- Snotlout being unconscious was one of the worst things that could happen.
When they got to Gothi, her mouth tightened and she ushered them in, shutting them out just as quickly once Snotlout was laid out in her home. So the dragon riders sat outside, waiting for the healer's verdict.
Some hours later, Gothi opened her door and scribbled in the dirt, telling Hiccup: He will be fine. Sit with him. And teach this silly viking not to eat poison. Hiccup sat down beside his friend, who slept easily now that Gothi had worked his healing magic. And so Hiccup would wait, for however long it took, until Snotlout woke up and was healthy once more.
