The Mainland

The sky darkened around me. I felt a strong wind blowing from behind, chilling me to the bone. I knew a hurricane was coming, and it was going to beat me to the mainland. I still paddled though, I tried my hardest, knowing my efforts to beat the hurricane were useless. My life was going to end and all of my remains would be washed away by the current.

An ear-splitting crack awoke me from my uneasy slumber. I had no idea how much time had passed since the first wave had hit my life raft. All I knew was that night had come, and the hurricane had gotten stronger. The rain was pouring down heavily, quickly followed by deafening booms of thunder. I thought of my family. They must be sick with worry.

Another streak of lightning lit up the sky followed by screams of the few children in the other lifeboats that had actually survived the shipwreck. Hoping to find Jack, I searched the floating debris in the water. I looked for any sign that would leave me to believe he was still alive but there was nothing.

The mainland was nowhere to be seen and the ocean seemed to go on forever. The other survivors drifted away leaving me alone in the dark with no way of finding my way home.

A gargling shriek wafted across the water as a hand shot out of the crashing waves. I reached out to grasp it and pulled Jack out of the darkened sea. "I thought you were dead!" I said breathlessly. Still chocking and gasping for air, Jack tried to speak but was cut short as a wave crashed down over top of us. The raft tipped over and sent us splashing into the frigid water.
