Chapter 2: The City

I dashed along the city walls trying to find the right place to climb up the wall and jump over because the gate was no option. The city holds out the carriers and juggernauts with gigantic gates about 50 feet tall. I couldn’t understand why though. There was enough protection, right? I’m not sure, but lights were shooting out from the other side of the city walls. There was no doubt about it, a city meeting.

A city meeting is where the whole city comes together to talk about a problem or whatever “new improvements” Dr. Jinx has come up with. This means the guards will be at the meeting instead of at the gate. All, except one. This is one of my very best friends, Ender Bleu.

Ender was in law enforcement before everything occurred. He was a Jinx’s defender. Jinx ended up sucking him into “his law” and taking his fiancé. The wickedest part about that is he used her for an experiment, nothing else. Ender somehow got her back breaking Jinx’s Law, so he demoted him to agent. Ender tried his best to fight her disease off, but she became a half-human half-spider. He ended up shooting her because of her instinct to kill. Ever since then, he’s never been the same. He never had the “cure” injected into him, nor has he come in contact with juggernaut in a while. He helps convicts, like me, to hide in the shadows.

The first time we met was six years ago. The day I came in contact with a Juggernaut. He and Hayden had been walking behind me when the juggernaut sprinted up to me and opened its mouth. I tripped over my shoe and fell to the ground. The juggernaut started to fall on top of me, so I pulled my knife out and impaled it in its head. It didn’t matter though because there was an arrow in its neck. I threw it off of me, not touching if because once you touch it, you’re infected. Hayden’s weapon of choice is a crossbow, or a bow and arrow. I’m not sure why though because it’s heavier to lug around. Since then, we have all been together; never splitting up.

I sprinted over to the city gates, only to stop in my tracks seconds later. The gates were infested with juggernauts. I looked over at the wall that was surrounding the city, seconds later I found myself gliding up the wall very swiftly. I finally got to the top of the wall. The whole city was chaos. Juggernauts inside the city were tearing people to shreds. I was looking down to observe the whole city. It wasn’t a town meeting, it was a warning. Sirens started to ring and screams started to let out. Through all the chaos, I finally found the safe house. It wasn’t touched at all, except some blood stains. I looked at the inside of the wall. There was a pipe sliding down all the way to the ground. I slid all the way to the ground to realize I was surrounded by five juggernauts. I needed to act sharply.

The juggernaut threw his body at me. I slid at out my gun and shot him in the head. It fell to the ground bleeding out of its head as it gasped for air. It was dead. Not within two seconds I shot the other four in the head. Three bullets were left. I slid the gun back into my pants and started to sprint to the safe house.

I neared the safe house. I started to become tired. A juggernaut lunged himself at me and I shot him then and there. I needed more ammunition. I looked over at the door.

Haden screamed, “Get your ass in here now!”

I nodded and sprinted inside the house.

I fell to the ground out of breath. It felt like someone had been sitting on my chest for my whole life. Hayden fell down next to me.

“Are you okay Klaus? I thought you were dead”.

“Hayden, Yes, I’m fine”, as I was gasping for air.

“What the hell, you could’ve gotten yourself killed.”

“That’s beside the point. I didn’t. Now listen, do we have ammo for a .357 desert eagle?”

“Yeah, I’m sure we do, why?”

“I picked one up from a proxy.”

“You killed a fucking proxy?”

“Yes Hayden, now go get me some ammunition!”

Hayden was always afraid I would get into more trouble with the law. This was impossible. The law now looked as if it was dying.

“Damn it Klaus, what happened to your hand.”

“Oh Yeah, I can’t feel it. The proxy stepped on it. Help?”

“Of Course.”

Hayden walked back to get the first–aid kit. I crawled back to the wall behind me and propped myself up onto it. Somewhere in between propping myself up and Hayden going to get the kit, I felt numb.

I woke up very dehydrated in a room that almost looked like a bunker. I wasn’t sure if I was touched by a carrier or what. I wasn’t sure where everyone was, but I needed to find water. I looked around the shelves. I found water, food, and ammo. I wasn’t sure where we were, but I didn’t think we were in the city because I didn’t hear any sirens or screams. I looked down at my hand, it was healed. I needed to find Ender and Hayden. The desert eagle was next to where I was laying. I picked it up and slid it into my back pocket. After I rehydrated, I searched for a door around the room. I was so glad that it was just the fact I was thirsty and not infected. In the shadows, I found a door. I slipped my gun out from my pants and kicked open the door. A bright white light shined in my face, then, the city.

Everything was done. There were no juggernauts. The city was in ruins with blood all over. From my left peripheral vision, I saw Hayden and Ender. They ran out of the bunker to me. Hayden hugged me and wouldn’t let me go. Ender, with his tuxedo and sun black Knockarounds pushed us into the bunker.

“Hayden. Ender. What is today?”

“Hayden fixed you up really fine Klaus”, said Ender as he rushed to lock the door.

“Yeah, I really wasn’t sure what happened. Ender and I have been in this bunker we found for a couple of months. How do you feel?”

“A couple of months, guys, what’s today?”

“Hayden, why don’t you tell him everything”, Ender said as he turned away from me.

“Tell me what!”

“Klaus”, Hayden said, “the world has gone mad.”
