You smile so eagerly
It's like you are fine
But you're not, my dear
You forget you are mine

Clare shot up from her spot next to Jack in an instant, but not before Ralph had ran into the jungle. Her eyes widened in terror about what she had just seen and she winced when she heard him screaming a few seconds later. She covered her face with her hands and a small sob left her body.

He must be so crushed, he probably hates me!

A tear trailed down her cheek, and her mind was spinning. Her world was falling apart before her eyes and all she could do was watch it crumble. She was shaking, confused and utterly terrified. Jack however, sat there, mouth agape, and contemplated what he had just witnessed. He ran a hand through his rusty hair and breathed out hard through his pursed lips. He finally turned to face Clare, his blue eyes flashing angrily.

"What the fuck was that?" He said, his voice a poisonous whisper.

Clare rubbed the sleep from her eyes, her mind buzzing with countless lies. She looked at the crackling fire for a minute and made her decision.

"I-I don't k-know." She lied, easily. It was like her fib just naturally bounced off her tongue like nothing was wrong. Jack made a face, he wasn't having it. He sighed and his brows furrowed, he did that when he was trying not to get angry.

"You do know. Clare, what was that about?" He said, his voice shaking from his attempt to stay calm. The girl looked at her feet, but still clung to her lie like a branch above a deep canyon.

"I already told you, I. Don't. Know!" Clare said quietly. Jack groaned in exasperation. He kicked at the ground, dust swirling up around his bare feet.

"Clare, I know you do. Tell me, why was Ralph so upset then?" The boy said, his voice raising. Clare could see his fists clenching at his side. She hated lying to Jack, it killed her on the inside. But the truth just might hurt him instead.

"Maybe he didn't like the thought of us being together?" She fibbed, again. Jack's breathing seemed to quicken with his anger. He knew her well enough now to tell if she was lying.

"Don't lie to me!" He yelled. The girl stood her ground, she was not one to be the weaker side of a fight. She sighed, Jack was relentless. She knew she had to give up, and maybe if he truly loved her, he would forgive her.

"Ralph and I, we...." Clare gulped, now slightly afraid to tell him. Jack narrowed his eyes.

"You what?"

"We..............we kissed." She said, immediately looking at her feet. She felt Jack give out a long sigh.

"When." He said, his voice a deathly calm.

"I don't remember I-" she started.

"Yes you do!"

"No Jack I don't!"

"STOP FUCKING LYING!" He was screaming by now. He grabbed onto her wrist violently, his fingers digging into her skin.

"IM NOT!"

Slap!

A loud slap rang throughout the area when Jack's hand came in contact with Clare's cheek. The force of it knocked Clare sideways and then to the hard ground. The girl felt dirt and rock scrape her arms and legs painfully. She lifted her head up and touched her hand to her red cheek, it stung. Her arms were now bleeding from where she had fallen to. Tears welled up in her eyes, she was used to taking hits from her brothers, but not like this, this was full of hate. She looked into Jack's eyes and saw no regret in them, they were darkened with anger.
