Icy grey clouds drifted across the sky like curtains, completely obscuring the sun from view as heavy pellets of water fell down to the ground. The sound of gunshots and bullets being fired were momentarily clouded out by a gregarious boom of thunder that could’ve shook the ground so severely that Lafayette would’ve fallen, had he not already crashed down on his knees at the sight of Thomas on the floor, covered in his own blood.

The crimson liquid leaked out of the obvious bullet wound in his chest, soaking his clothes and Lafayette’s shaking hand as he tried so desperately to conceal the hole.

“Thomas,” He choked out, watching as the blood gushed out at the same speed as the rain poured from the clouds.

“It… it hurts…” Were the first words that Thomas rasped out, his eyes wide with both fear and shock as he tried to look down at his chest, but Lafayette was quick to stop him, tilting his head back up.

“I know, mon amour. I know.” The frenchman managed to get out in the most soothing way he could, stroking the tears that began to fall down Thomas face away. Carefully, he manoeuvred his lover so he was lying across his lap, his own tears splashing down onto Thomas’ already wet cheek.

“M-make it… stop.” Thomas pleaded, reaching up shakily to hold Lafayette’s jaw, watching as his face crumpled with choked sobs emitting from his throat, still trying so hard to cover the wound on his chest.

“I’m trying, Thomas. I’m trying. Please stay awake for me. Please.”

“I-I don’t think that… t-that i can…” he whispered back, the fear now settling in as he took in the reality of the situation.

“Non, non, stay awake.” Lafayette whispered, bending down to touch their foreheads together, closing his eyes to try and create a barrier to stop his tears from flowing. With his trembling free hand, he gently wiped away Thomas’ tears. “You’re going to be okay. Please be okay. Stay awake.”

“I… I can’t.”

“Oui, you can. Do it for me, okay? For me.”

“Marie-“

“I’ll sing for you. I know you love it when i sing. Will that make you feel better, mon amour?” Lafayette choked on his words as he spoke, looking deeply into Thomas’ deep and gorgeous eyes that he woke up to every morning. The eyes that held his hope in them. The eyes that were currently fluttering dangerously against his tears.

“Y-Yes,” Thomas nodded, reaching up with a weak hand to rest it on his loves cheek, stroking his cheek with his thumb.

“Y-You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…”

Thomas let a smile spread on his lips as he heard Lafayette’s gentle voice, reminding him of all the times he had sung that song before. Their first date, all the times he was upset, all the times when he was angry, frustrated of in need of cheering up. Their wedding.

“You make me happy when skies are grey…”

Thomas knew he couldn’t hold on much longer, he could feel his body growing limp. He could feel the pain of his heart breaking for Lafayette as he watched his tears flow and heard his quiet sobs.

“You’ll never know dear, how much i love you…”

Thomas leant up with the smallest amount of strength he had left and pressed a gentle and tender kiss to Lafayette wet cheek, only making the man cry harder, his shoulders starting to shake as he held him desperately.

“So please don’t take my sunshine away…”

“I love you.” Thomas whispered with the smile that he knew Lafayette loved so much as his eyes fluttered closed and his body grew completely limp in Lafayette’s arms.

“Please don’t take my sunshine… away…” Lafayette sung, his tone so far broken he could barely stand to hear himself. And with every atom in his body screaming at him not to, he put a hand over Thomas’ heart.

No pulse.

The only sounds that were audible over the booming thunder was his scream and the loud, pained cries that ripped from his chest.
