18 Days Later

My alarm clock went off at 7 am and for once in my life I didn't haul it across the room. I couldn't believe that I was actually excited for school. I was going to be the "new girl" again and that made my heart flutter. I was weird like that.

I got dressed and headed downstairs. The last 2 weeks had been all about school shopping and I was happy that I was prepared.

"Hey honey. You ready?" my dad asked. I nodded and grabbed an apple off the kitchen table.

"Is that all you're going to eat?" I laughed.

"Since when do you care about what I eat? Besides, I shouldn't even be eating this," I said eyeing the apple. I shrugged and bit it. "But I'm starving."

My dad shook his head. "Whatever. School starts at-."

"7:45. Yes dad, I know."

"Well, we should get going then," he said starting for the door. I grabbed the back of his shirt.

"Dad, I'm sixteen and I have my permit. All I need is an adult in the car so maybe......," I said.

"Yeah, yeah. I don't know if I trust my car in your hands though," he admitted. I smiled and grabbed the keys out of his hand. This day was going to perfect.....

Boy was I wrong.

Turns out that my dad forgot to fill up the gas tank so the car stopped in the middle of the street. Cars honked behind us. "Dad what do I do?" I shrieked. "Florence calm down," he said. I took deep breaths. I made a promise to myself to never use his car again since it was clearly trying to kill me....okay, I was going insane.

"Let's get out," I said. My dad nodded. "Well, I'll be late to school on the first day. Lucky me."

And I was late. By the time I reached Portland Day High School, the first and second periods had come and gone. Plus I was 15 minutes late to third.

"Hi, I'm Florence Montgomery. Sorry I'm late," I said to the teacher. He didn't even look up at me. "Go have a seat please," he said. "Rude much," I thought to myself. I scanned the room and found a seat in the back of the classroom. I made my way there and sat down next to the girl that had taken the seat next to mine. As the teacher continued his lesson, the girl next to me said, "Hi, I'm Kasadee but you can call me Kas." I smiled. I was making friends easier than I thought I would. "I'm Florence," I responded. "Cool name. You're new right?" I nodded. "Yeah, I moved here a couple weeks ago." She nodded.

And that was the end of our conversation until lunch. Fourth and Fifth period were a breeze. It's not that I was super smart (because I really wasn't) but I seemed to understand what the teachers were talking about and that was all I needed to get through the rest of the day.

When lunch came around, Kas had found my locker and asked me if I wanted to sit with her and her friends. I hesitated but realized that I needed a social rep. "Yeah that sounds like fun," I said. She motioned me to follower her.

The cafeteria was over-crowded. There were just too many teenagers in one area. I followed Kas to a table in the corner where 3 other kids sat there eating lunch.

"Hey guys. This is Florence. She'll be eating lunch with us today," she said. A guy with blonde hair and blue eyes pulled out a chair for me. I took and said, "Thanks." He smiled. I sat down and he held out his hand. "I'm Nathan," he said. I shook his hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Alright," Kas said. She pointed a girl with short brown hair and pink highlights and said, "This is Rachelle Madigan. She's super nice but she's crazy when she's mad so please don't piss her off." I waved and she waved back. Then she pointed to a guy with brownish-blackish hair and beautiful green eyes. "This is Mason Andrews. He's so annoying so you might not want to associate yourself with him," she laughed. Mason rolled his eyes playfully. "Yeah, and eventually you'll be able talk and not hear her voice."

"Oh, whatever," Kas said. "You already know Nathan so I guess that's it. We all know each other now," she smiled. Everything was going great and then people started screaming.

"Dammit, not again!" Nathan said. I stood up and saw mobs of kids running in every direction. "What's going on?" I asked. Kas responded, "It's those dumb ass seniors. I really wish that would stick with picking on the freshmen." Okay, I was confused but then I saw what was happening. It was like someone let loose the school bullies. Food fights started breaking out. Full on fist-fights, teachers trying to break up the impossible. And I knew our little table stood no chance. "Well, what do we do? Run? Hide?"

"Scream?" Rachelle suggested.

"I'm going to go with run," Kas said quickly. Everyone agreed so we make a run for it. Rachelle, Kas, Mason, and Nathan had all made it out.

I was at the door when I saw him, this guy who caused me to stop and stare at his beautiful face. Our eyes locked and for a second, everything else, all the noise, the people, everything, had faded away. I had a sudden desire to run up to him and press my lips against his and just.....

I felt someone tug my arm and the noise and commotion returned. I broke away from his gaze and followed Kas outside to the fresh August air.
