Kelly was nervous, she hadn't talked to the Davis family in years and now here she was, getting ready to attend Richard Davis' funeral, Adam's father. Jack unfortunately couldn't take work off, and Kelly didn't want to bring Patience to something like this so she would be attending all by herself.
She knew she was supposed to wear black to a funeral but she also didn't want to look over the top or underdressed. She decided on a form-fitting black dress and a knitted gray sweater to wear over that. She put her hair into a slightly messy bun at the nape of her neck. She also did her makeup a little darker than normal but she thought it was suiting. Adding some simple jewelry, she slipped on her black heels and put on some perfume. Making sure she had her phone, purse, and travel mug full of coffee, she headed out to her car.Gray clouds made up the morning sky, Kelly hoped that it wouldn't rain. It was cool outside but not cool enough for her to turn on the heater in her car. The nerves in her stomach grew as she pulled into the funeral home parking lot.
She took a deep breath as she got out of her car, following the crowd of people into the funeral home's entrance. Inside, the funeral home was warm and elegant looking. White, gold, and red where the color scheme, it was in the carpeting and the wallpaper. Large white pillars lined the walls, chandeliers hung from the ceiling, the place screamed wealth.Kelly continued to follow the crowd into a large room where people stood, socializing. There was a table full of pastries and other snack food, as well as a table set up for coffee, water and other beverages. Kelly made a bee-line for the coffee station, grabbing a prestien white mug, she poured herself some of the dark liquid. Adding a splash of milk and a small package of sugar.
"Hey, Kells." Adam said, making her jump.
"Adam! You scared me." She said turning to look at him, glad she hadn't spilled anything.
"Sorry..." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I see you found the coffee table." He said with a smile. His voice was deep and gravelly.
"Yeah, how are you holding up?" Kelly asked, taking a sip.
"I'm okay I guess, just trying to get used to the fact that he's gone." His face was downcast, Kelly gave him a sad smile. "You look beautiful by the way." He changed the subject, gesturing to Kelly.
"Oh, thank you, you don't clean up bad yourself." He gave out a small laugh. Adam was wearing a black suit and tie, his hair was slicked back and his beard had been trimmed.
"My mother has been dying to see you by the way, would you like to visit her?" Adam's choice of words stuned Kelly a little but she decided not to bring it up.
"I'd love to."
Kelly followed Adam through the clusters of people and up a grand stair case. In a large study, the Davis family sat talking quietly, Kelly felt as though she was intruding on the family but as soon as she entered the room, Mrs. Davis' face lit up and she knew she wasn't. The gray haired woman stood, hands covering her heart.
"Kelly Wilson, is that you?" Her voice was small and soft.
"Hey, Mrs. Davis." Kelly smiled.
"Oh, sweetheart, its Charlene." The two women embraced, smiles on both of their faces. Both able to find a moment of joy in a day full of mourning.
"I'm so sorry for your loss." Kelly said as they pulled apart, their hands resting on each other's forearm's.
"Oh, thank you. Richard was a wonderful man...I'm just glad he left peacefully." The older woman's face was down cast.
"You know, I still have that wooden doll he made me...if you would like I can give to you." Kelly offered. Mr. Davis had made one for Kelly when she was young, they never had a daughter but since Kelly's family and their's were close he treated her as though she was their daughter. He actually made one for Patience when he found out she was pregnant but he promised not to tell anyone so she doubted Charlene knew about the second one.
