Hand in hand the girls ran from their homes, their families, their friends and everything they grew up in and have ever known. They ran past the local high school. They ran past their favourite shops and all the places they loved to hang out. They ran and ran until their feet ached and their lungs were begging for air. Out of pack borders they ran, avoiding any wolves on patrol.
The burning of their limbs and lungs didn't stop them though. They ran until they were sure they were a few territories from their old pack.
The two girls sat on the edge of the high way, watching the sun rise from its hiding spot behind a mountain. It was mostly Stacy watching the sun rise though. Alex sat in a cloudy haze watching the love of her life. She had no doubt in her mind that what they doing was the right thing, and she would rather be dead than be without Stacy.
After resting for a while longer, the girls hitched their bags higher up on their shoulders. Stacy carried two bags filled with clothes and toiletries, while Alex carried another two with their parent's savings and some food. Stealing was wrong, but how else were the girls going to survive. They couldn't live off wild berries and dirty water forever.
"I'm tired." Stacy yawned, and Alex looked at her sternly. Stacy knew that she couldn't sleep now, they were still too close to the pack lands to even rest for a day. Their parents probably had the whole pack looking for them by now, and she wasn't willing to go back.
She loved Alex, and would forever love Alex until her heart ceased it's beating. But she wondered if they made the right choice. Sure if they had stayed, the two girls probably would have never seen each other again, but what if this was a mistake. What if they never even made it through next year, then what would she do.
No, she refused to think this way, she loved Alex and Alex loved her.
The two girls trudged along the busy highway, the sun blazing full force upon their backs. They had tried to hitch a ride from any moving thing they saw, but no one stopped. The girls were just about ready to lie down on the old dirt path, when a rusty old pick up truck stopped a few feet ahead of them.
"You girls want a ride?" The middle aged man asked in his thick country accent, sticking his head out of the window. The wind blowing the ends of his red hair across his face from under his jean hat. Though they had never seen the man before, the girls were in desperate need of the ride, and were in no position to decline. They gladly nodded their heads and the man chuckled, before hopping out of the driver side of the van.
The man smiled brightly at them as he walked to the back of the truck, but it did not quite reach his eyes. Stacy noticed that there was something strange about him. Maybe it was the way that his beer gut rolled when he helped them into the back of the truck. Maybe it was the way his eyes hungrily took in every inch of their bodies. Or maybe, just maybe, it was the way his little pig -who he called runt- looked at them as if it wanted them to run, as if it almost felt sorry for them. She looked at Alex to find her staring at nothing in particular, and thought it was all in her mind, so she just brushed it off.

The wind blew furiously into Alex eyes as she stood at the back of the van looking out into the distance. When the van hit a bump, dust rose in the air and some tiny particles flew into Alex's eyes. She quickly slid down the van into a sitting position and furiously rubbed her eyes. After blinking a few times, and wiping her watering eyes, Alex looked over at the sleeping Stacy. She fell asleep not too soon after they got the ride from the man they learned as Carl. Alex looked at the love of her life sleeping soundly on one of their bags. She would do whatever it took protect what they had. There was no title on their relationship, but Stacy knew how she felt about her and Alex knew how Stacy felt about her, and that was good enough for them. For now.
Alex knew not where they were going, or what they were going to do when they got there, but she prayed to the Luna that they would be alright.
Stacy had slowly woken up as the sun left the sky. The two didn't converse, they would share a few smiles, glances and kisses, every now and again, but the only sound that could be heard was the roar of the truck's engine. Maybe they were just relishing the feel of each other, or maybe they were lost in their only little world, but the quiet soon bored Alex, so she fell asleep. Stacy soon followed even if she had slept earlier on. She wanted to be with Alex in her dreams, so she laid her head on Alex's shoulder and fell asleep with a content smile on her face.
