Jordan sat back down on the sofa, studying Mattie. He'd heard her gasp, but it was obvious that he wasn't supposed to. Deciding not to comment on it for the time being he cleared his throat.
"Babysitting isn't one of your duties but thank you the little booger woke me up as soon as it seemed my head hit the pillow.I appreciate you stepping in.I don't know what's gotten into him he is usually leeched to my side."
Mattie shifted Emerson gently so she didn't wake him "He may miss his mama.Any updates on your family Mr Knight ?"
Jordan checked his phone noticing no missed calls or texts.
No news was good news
That meant Nate was still holding his own. He had to call Aiden and check on Jazzy but Aiden knew to call immediately if anything changed with the little one.
"Can you keep him here just for a few minutes while I go up to my apartment to shower and change I smell like fucking baby vomit "
Mattie stifled a giggle as she nodded.
Mattie decided to bathe Emerson while Jordan was gone since the baby woke up soon after he left .
Half an hour later Mattie had Emerson bathed dressed and fed playing on his activity mat that Jordan left in the diaper bag.Laying on his back Emerson cooed and babbled at the animals above his head as he watched them sway on the attached mobile.
Jordan tapped lightly on the door and slid through it quietly when Mattie told him to come in.The sight that greeted him amazed him. Emerson squealing with delight as Mattie blew obnoxious sounding raspberries on his belly.
Jordan stood in the doorway silently watching.
He couldn't go soft on this intern and he knew that but he couldn't help but think there was just something about her that was special
Emerson spotted Jordan and shrieked
"Easy there Eman you're gonna break everyone's eardrums "Jordan teased as he got down on the floor with the baby
"What do you say little man wanna go see Mama ?"
"MAMAMAMA !!" the earsplitting shriek echoed through Mattie's small apartment
"Thank you Miss Leman" Jordan murmured not meeting Mattie's gaze as he scooped the baby up in his arms
When Emerson squirmed to get to Mattie Jordan held him out closer to her as the baby smacked a wet sloppy baby kiss on her cheek
Not long after Jordan was out the door leaving Mattie to the silence of her tiny apartment.
The weekend flew by for Jordan who spent most of his time either entertaining Jazzy when she was released from the hospital, helping Mary with Emerson and studying everything he could on the house fire. He'd given them one of the empty apartments to use within Knight Forensics so that the family had a place to stay and were close by in case they needed him. Unlike the rest of the Knight family Mary was not originally from the area and had no close family locally. Jordan searched but found no one which was something he'd never known. Apparently, Mary was orphaned young, grew up in foster care and met Nate through mutual friends.
When had he become so callous and self-absorbed to not realize Mary had no one but who was left in his family ?
Monday dawned sooner than Mattie wanted it to. She hadn't seen Jordan since he left her apartment Saturday afternoon. Knowing he was completely different outside the office Mattie dreaded seeing him. His interaction with the kids was a complete different approach as he'd shown his lowly new intern who continually fucked up.
When she walked through the doors Mattie was surprised to see Jordan not there yet. Aiden explained that he was at the house something seemed to have caught his interest in one of the photos.Mattie took the cup Aiden offered and sipped
"So what do we need to do ?"
Mattie never heard Jordan walk in behind her
"You're coming with me.Best way for you to learn how to gather evidence."
Mattie damn near jumped out of her skin causing Aiden to laugh hysterically.
Thankfully she'd managed to not spill her coffee
"Grab bags and the tools for digging and you may want to change into comfortable clothing"
Mattie realized then that Jordan wore black jeans , black shirt and work boots.
"I know you have nothing here just run up to your apartment and grab what you need ."
Mattie nodded as she tossed her now empty Styrofoam cup in the trash and bolted out the door.
"Go easy on her today J"
Jordan narrowed his eyes
"She took care of Eman and made you fucking dinner you asshole none of which is in her job description. Besides she's cute "
Jordan clamped his mouth shut as he balled his hands into fists shoving them into his pockets feeling suddenly jealous and protective at the same time
What the fuck
Jordan walked into the lab grabbed printouts on the fax machine he requested and his gear bag.
Mattie returned in record time dressed in jeans a hoodie and boots.Her hair knotted in a bun tightly under a baseball cap
Jordan led the way to his truck he attempted to open the passenger side door for Mattie but she brushed him off .Walking around to the driver's side Jordan tried to clear his senses of the smell that he now associated with Mattie.He'd never be able to smell peaches and vanilla again without thoughts of her long black mane and beautiful eyes .Eyes he could stare at forever and hair his fingers itched to run themselves through preferably while he stared down into those hypnotizing eyes as he claimed her .
Shaking off the thoughts Jordan started the car and sped off onto Waldeck Street toward Melville Ave.
