In the Wiccan religion, a common feature is the practice of magic (also spelled magick to differentiate between the act of illusions and the act of working with energy). As defined by Scott Cunningham magic is "The projection of natural energies to produce needed effects. Although shockingly common in the vast majority of religions magic holds a special place in Wicca. The purposeful practice of magic is one of the ways we grow closer to our deities. By invoking their names in rituals or visualizing their presence while we work we continue to get develop our relationships with our deities. This may explain why the majority of other practitioners I have met (including myself) treat their deity more as a close and important friend than anything else. The invoking of deities is just one way a Wicca or magic practitioner will gather power for magic work. There are three basic categories of power: personal power, earth power, and divine power. Personal power is the energy we have. Whether you get it from eating food, warming up in the sun or absorbing the moon's rays you are gathering energy which will later be released in movement, like exercise or even breathing. Personal power in magic is used by charging it with your intent and releasing it directed towards its goal. Earth power is the power that is in the planet and the bits of nature around it. Things like element representatives, herbs and crystals all fit into this category and are commonly used in magic work. Divine power is the power that is within your deity, invoking a deity is using this power. Although magic is commonly held dear to the Wiccan religion it can be used by anyone regardless of religion. Witchcraft is simply the active and purposeful practice of magic. There are many who practice witchcraft and are not Wiccan and there are many Wicca who do not practice witchcraft. The two are not exclusive to each other.
