Chapter six - Exchanging Treasures

~Narrators POV~

A treacherously handsome man stepped out of the shadows, his feet pattering along the marble surface as he walked towards the balcony looking irritatedly down and the young lad.

"Who are you? How dare you enter the havelli! Guards!" The man demands, his smooth velvet voice booming through the halls.

The young lads face is the picture of fury as he spits furiously "Don't recognise me? I'm the one who will rewrite your kismet, how dare you touch my girl! You will pay Koirala" The lads nostrils flare as he stalks towards the powerful man.

The man smirks as he realises the young boy. A glass of champagne hangs from his right hand as he sips it thoughtfully.

"Ahaan your that Juliet's, Romeo. It's Thakur Neil Koirala, Don't make the mistake of disrespecting me in my own village, I own the ground you walk in, the air your breathe in. OUT scum!" Neil spat turning and walking away from the lad.

"Scum? I don't recall asking you to define yourself. I think the word scum is reserved for sick people like you! How dare you touch my fiancée, how can you live with yourself for treating another human like that. Who the hell do you think you are! Do you think you can get away with this! I will take this to court if I have to" Rajan snarls angrily.

Koirala turned around, a fierce expression on his face. "EH! Watch your tongue peasant, one click of my finger and everything your family has worked for, from previous generations will be destroyed! Don't forget I'm from the Thakur Khandaan! Court? you won't leave the havelli alive boy, leave whilst you can, I'm a busy man and have no time for peasants like you".

The young lad seems to think for a moment before stepping forward and looking directly at Neil "Busy doing what, assaulting girls?" Rajan spoke bravely his eyes fuelled with passion as he held his head high.

A cruel smile crept onto Neil's face as he whipped back around and spoke "Your so hurt huh, that I touched your ladki (girl), kissed her, made love to her before you, watched her body m-"

Rajans face contorted in rage as he furiously shouted "KOIRALA" as he punched a nearby vase, it shattering into pieces loudly.

Neil smirked before tossing 100 rupees at Rajan. "That's all she's worth, go!"

The lad stood up and stared at him defiantly. Neil sighed and threw 5000 rupees at Rajan's feet.

"Really Thakur, you think she is only worth 5000? imagine the shame if she started a court case on you, your family's reputation would be in tatters, what if your father and sister learnt of your antics. Your reputation and respect is only worth 5000 rupees" Rajan smirked calmly.

A shocked smile graced Neil's lips, as he relaxed. Letting out a laugh he pulled a thick wad of cash, and threw it at Rajan's feet. "Ek crore" ( ek crore means 1 million).

Rajan dropped to the floor and began picking up the green notes stuffing them in his rucksack.

"Thankyou Thakur Saab (sir)" Rajan replied a grin on his lips.He bowed low before standing up and laughing out loud as he strolled over towards Neil.

"Let's celebrate come sit. Take meethai (traditional sweets ate for celebration) with me, I have to admit your acting skills are professional, maybe a career path to look into" Neil smirked.

"Hmmm I've considered it, of course I'll eat meethai, pleasure doing business with you sir" Rajan bowed his head before bringing the sweet to his lips.

Neil chuckled "Without your help it would of taken me a lot of time to get my revenge but your cunning and wit helped. That note, mindblowing! I'm impressed."

"I knew every full moon the village travels to the next village for a festival at the temple, I thought she would remember, stupid girl." Rajan spat.

In the ruckus no one heard a brown haired girl heart shattering as she watched in shock and utter disgust as her Ashiq ( lover) traded her away for money. Her honey orbs filled with tears as she escaped down the drive her hair blowing in the wind behind her.

A silver anklet slips off her ankle and lands on the doorstep of the palace door as Shanti races away into the night.

A quarter of an hour later Rajan leaves the havelli, content as he walks down the steps his eyes catch the silver anklet gleaming in the moonlight.

His eyes widen as he picks it up. He turns it over in his hands a sombre expression on his face. The wind whistles eerily as he looks out into the night processing the fact that he may have gained money today but he has lost his girl.

"She heard" Rajan whispers to himself as he looks up at the moon sorrowfully, his voice laced with regret and his eyes shining.

Shanti is running along a deserted track the moon shining brightly over her as tear after tear slips down her face. Her eyes flick up to the moon as she whispers "Everything's finished".
