Keith's P.O.V.
Keith sat up and rubbed his eyes; he'd tried to sleep for hours, but couldn't. He slipped on his beat up old tennis shoes, threw on his red jacket, and walked out of his bedroom. His hands in his pockets and his head down, Keith walked quietly through the Castle of Lions, careful not to wake anyone up. He would love to head for the training room to get his mind off things, but that would alert Coran and surely wake everyone else up, especially if something went wrong, like when the Galra crystal messed up the Castle and almost got them all killed.
Instead, Keith walked down to the lounge and headed to the far side of the couch. He sat down and all the realizations rushed to him. Shiro was dead, and he was expected to lead Team Voltron. He had been keeping his tears and sobs in all night, but he couldn't take it anymore. Once the first tear rolled down his cheek, all of his feelings came rushing out. His chest was racked with sobs and his hands soon became wet from all the tears. He cried for what felt like hours, but it was only about ten minutes. Memories kept rushing back to him: finding Shiro after he'd been missing for so long, Shiro telling Keith to lead the team if he didn't make it, getting the knife from the Blade of Marmora and finding out he was part Galra. Knowledge or death.
Honestly, Keith would have woken everyone up if he had done this in his bedroom. His sobs were very loud, and they echoed around the lounge. Keith had said he knew who he was without the knife, but now he felt like he didn't know who he was without Shiro.
When the sobs stopped and Keith seemed to run out of tears, he kept his head in his hands and let the tears dry up. Closing his eyes, Keith shut out the world and got lost in his thoughts. He closed his eyes and felt calm for a little while, until anger started to come through.
If it wasn't for the Galra, Shiro would still be alive. His closest friend on the team, his role model, like a brother to him, would still be alive. Keith felt a burning anger welling up inside of him, like a volcano ready to explode. He shot up from his seat and said, almost shouted, "He was like a brother to me."
Keith's eyes opened wide in shock as he saw he wasn't alone. Pidge was standing up a few feet away from him, and she had spoken at the same time as him, "He was like a father to me."
It was obvious she had been in the lounge for a while and had been crying, too. She fingered her glasses and her cheeks turned a violent shade of red. She sat down, embarrassed, and looked down at her feet. Keith watched her in shock, feeling the angry emotions leaving him and a sense of calm replacing them. Someone else shared in his pain. Someone else understood him, missed Shiro because of more reasons than being without a leader.
"Keith, I-I'm sorry. I d-didn't mean to--," Pidge started saying, looking back up at Keith before she was cut off.
"I didn't know how much he meant to you," Keith said, putting his right hand on his left arm, trying to find a comfortable place to put it. He felt tears welling up again, and he could see it in Pidge's eyes, too.
Then, Keith put his hand on Pidge's shoulder in a comforting way. Pidge smiled back up at him before doing something unexpected. She took a few rushed steps toward him and hesitated for a fraction of a second, and then hugged Keith.
Keith didn't know what to say. He stood with wide eyes and could feel himself blushing. He smiled and laughed, when Pidge seemed to realize what she was doing. She quickly detached herself from Keith and rushed out of the lounge, not realizing she had dropped her glasses.
Keith looked down at them and said, "Wait, Pidge!" he was still in shock over what had just happened to him. He stretched out his hand towards the door where Pidge had just left. Next, he picked up the glasses and dusted them off, then stood in the spot for a few moments. He wanted to say something to Pidge, but didn't know what. Putting the glasses in his jacket pocket, Keith walked back to his bedroom to get some sleep.~~ ~~
