Chapter 1: Being Friends with a Bully
It was the strong and shining lights beaming from my window shades that woke me up. I wasn’t really a morning person. In fact, who could love waking up early? As my chocolate brown eyes fluttered open, I saw blurry vision of my thirteen year old brother, Max. I annoyingly groaned and pushed him out of my way. I walked to the bathroom and slammed the door shut.
I was in the process of applying shampoo in my brunette hair. Hard and harsh knocks were on the door. “Hey, Ash? Can you please hurry up so I can ask you a quick favor? I need five euros.” Max yelled from the other side of the door. He was my only sibling. Sometimes I felt like I wanted to trade him off the streets and get a sweet, innocent girl instead. Sure, he is annoying, but at the end of the day, I’ll love him even more.
I ignored what he said, and began to slip into my clothes for the day. Since I lived in Australia where the weather is warm every day, I felt like wearing a white mid-knees dress today. At the top was laced and was a bit ruffled at the bottom. I paired it up with brown sandals and headed out the door.
This year is senior year for me. I couldn’t wait to graduate high school, and head over to a fashion designing career. Ever since I was little, mum always dressed me with clothes that were either floral or girly. She made sure that I was dressed proper and that everything matched. With that being said, I gathered up my textbooks, binders, and papers and headed downstairs to meet mum and Max for breakfast.
“Good morning, mum!” I greeted happily. I sat down in the dining room table, ready to grab myself pancakes and bacon. Mum’s cooking was the best. We rarely headed out to eat, but if we did that was for a special occasion. Max joined in dressed in basketball shorts, a black jacket, and white converse. I didn’t understand why Justin Bieber was his role model and why he always styled his hair like his. I couldn’t stand his music. I mean, it was okay I guess, but it wasn’t my cup of tea.
I leaned in and messed up Max’s hair. His nose crinkled as he swatted my hand away. “Ewe, Ashley! Don’t you understand that it takes me a long time to get my hair perfect? I heard on YouTube that girls loved this hair style, so please don’t ruin it.” Max stated. He dropped his fork and began to fix it up again. If that was my hair, I would just flip it back to its direction and it would be fine.
“Well alright then. So, who’s the girl that you’re trying to impress?” I shot Max a wink as he rolled his eyes and finished up his breakfast. He washed his plate and went to the living room to watch the television for a bit. Because his school is ten blocks away and mum is lazy to drive him to school, he takes the bus to the school. On the other hand, my school is a couple blocks away so I walk.
The bus finally honked and signaled that it’s here. Max gathered his backpack together and waved goodbye. I messed up his hair one more time as he rolled his eyes and slapped my arm. I giggled and glanced at mum. “He’s so adorable! Ever considered having a baby girl? I mean, I could do her hair, choose her clothes, and do whatever I wanted that I can’t do with the dweeb that left.”
Mum smiled and glared a little, “Oh no, Ashley! Raising two kids is tough enough already for me. Shouldn’t you be on your way to school now?” This was her way of telling me to get out. She tossed me my backpack and ushered me out of the house.
I looked across the street and saw a blonde haired boy leaving as well. It way that guy that always teased me and made fun of me ever since middle school. Sometimes he pushes it way too much and annoys the shit out of me. If I could, I would slap him across the face and put a bad curse on him or something. Only if magic was real, I would do it.
