Now for some of you, you might not know who Ned Kelly is. And I'm not going to ridicule you or any of that, for he is a main part of Australia history and not really taught anywhere else (I don't think). But I thought for the sake of you who don't know, or could do with a refresher, I'd give you a little bit of history about him as he is related to my three characters and essential part as to why they are the way they are.

Edward 'Ned' Kelly was born somewhere between 1854 and 1855, his actual date of birth is unknown, in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. He was the eldest son of eight children. His family moved to Glenrowan when he was young, where they lived in severe poverty.

When he was 14, he was arrest for assaulting a Chinese pig farmer, and for being an accomplice of bush ranger, Harry Power; where he was found not guilty for both charges. A year later, he was arrested again and charged. Three weeks after his release of six months worth of hard labour from the previous charge, he was arrested again for stealing a horse, and sentenced to three years worth of hard labour.

Once he was released from there, he became in a cattle rustling business (stealing cattle) with his brother, Dan. Which caught the permanent attention of the police, putting both the boys on their radar.

Ned and his mother were accused of attempted murder in 1878 by a police officer who fancied Ned's sister, sending Ned into hiding with his brother Dan whilst his mother served three years. The two Kelly brothers were later joined by Ned's friend, Joe Byrne and Dan's friend, Steve Hart. In October, he was found by police before he and his accomplices killed three of the men before escaping once more. It was from that moment on they were officially outlaws and became the notorious Kelly gang.

He went ahead to rob two banks in February of 1879, as he needed money to make suits of armour he believed would protect him from the police. Which consisted of a helmet, and full body suit made of thick metal parts; most of them stolen, others given out of pity. Though they allowed the gang to walk away unharmed, the suits weren't very functional.

Police caught onto his trail again in July 1880. And on July 27, the Kelly gang took hostages in a local hotel of Glenrowan. In a massive shootout, Ned stood out the front of the hotel; his accomplishes still inside. The police started a fire in the hotel to smoke the remaining members out after Ned was wounded. Joe Byrne was shot the moment he left the building, while Steve Hart and Dan Kelly died in the fire. He survived to stand trial and was sentenced to death. He was hung on November 11, with his final words being, Such Is Life.

Ned is an Australian Folk Hero, and a national icon. He is Australia's most famous bushranger, and has become a symbolic figure in Australian history, folklore, books, art and movies. And yeh, I hope this helps you understand my oc's a little more and gives you a little bit of insight to the country I live in and love.
