The house is built into the cavern wall. I see Toriel tending to a small garden in the front yard. I smile and grab Niko's hand. "She's right over there," I say.

Toriel looks towards my voice. She stands up and walks over, smiling. "Hello again, Frisk. Who is this little one?"

Niko steps forward as a small breeze flows through the ruins, making his scarf float up to his waist. "My name is Niko. I've been here for nearly a week."

Toriel smiles. "I can't believe I didn't see you."

Niko giggles as Toriel pats his hat, pushing it further onto his head. Toriel looks at Niko again, then at me. "Follow me, my children."

The two of us follow Toriel into the house. At the door, I look at this cozy house in these peaceful ruins. It fills me with Determination.

She leads us to a room. "I'm sure the two of you must be exhausted."

As if on cue, Niko yawns. I chuckle a bit before yawning myself.

We enter the room. There are boxes of toys by the single bed. It is rather large and can hold both me and Niko. I look in some boxes as Niko starts getting ready for bed. I find multiple pairs of shoes and more toys, mainly stuffed animals. Toriel has left us alone to rest or explore.

Niko's jacket, hat, and scarf are lying on a chair by a child's desk. I take off my shoes and put them by the foot of the bed. I scratch my head and sit on the floor. Niko lies on the bed and looks down to me. "Are you sure you don't want to sleep on the bed?"

"If you give me a pillow, I'll be fine."

"If that's what you want..."

He hands me a pillow and I lie on the ground, staring at the ceiling. I close my eyes and think of Mom. I wonder if she's looking for me. She's the only family that I've got. My Dad left when I was young. I can't really remember him well enough to really care about him. I feel a tear in my eye as I think of my Mom. She would head into the wheat fields, calling out my name, hoping that I answer. But... no matter how loud I shout... I grit my teeth, trying not to cry even more.

I sigh quietly and close my eyes, drifting away into slumber.

I awake in darkness. I sit up and look around. The room is gone. Niko is gone. Toriel is gone. I stand up and look around for anything. "Hello..." I hear from every direction.

I look around for the person speaking. I try to speak, but find that I'm silenced. "How curious."

My soul appears and floats up to eye-level in front of me. It's a full arm's reach away from me. "Yes, now it makes sense. Determination. You woke me up. Didn't you," the voice whispers.

Shadows form all around me, spreading across the floor and growing larger. They spread as if I were the light source. They all shoot under my soul and form into a silhouette. I lift my right arm and the figure copies. We are both equal distance away from my soul. The silhouette is grinning, even though it doesn't have a face. I can just tell. I look up at my soul. It's slowly cracking down the middle. I silently gasp and reach out to it. My hand goes through it, as does the silhouette's. I step closer, but the silhouette steps back. My soul and the figure look farther away. I take a few more steps closer, but end up being further away. "We are one now, Frisk."

I run at the figure and my soul frantically, but the force just keeps pushing me further and further back. I feel screams echo throughout me and my soul before jolting awake.

I sit up in the dark room, still in a cold sweat. I start to think about the dream, but a smell makes me forget. I stand up and look at the desk. I hear Niko's soft breathing near the bed; he's asleep. I reach the desk and see two plates of butterscotch-cinnamon pie. There is a slice on each plate. I smile. "Thank you, Toriel," I whisper.

In a few hours, Niko wakes up, yawning loudly. I look up from my book and look at him. "Rise and shine, sleepyhead."

He looks down and frowns. "I dreamt of my Mom. She's looking for me."

Tears start to form in his eyes. I walk over and sit in the bed. I hug him. "Don't worry. You'll see her again. I promise you'll see her soon."

He hugs me back in silence. After a few minutes, he asks, "Are you my brother?"

I stop hugging him and smile. "Of course."

He smiles a bit. "At least I have some family here."

I mess up his hair. "I'll keep you safe. Don't worry."

He yawns again and gets out of bed. He gets his coat on, then puts his scarf on. Afterwards, he puts on his hat, then his shoes. He looks at me. "Frisk, why don't you open your eyes?"

I frown. "It scares people sometimes, but don't worry. I can see just fine."

He nods. "Okay."

We walk out of the room and start for the living room. Niko stops by the stairs leading to the basement in the main hall. "I wanna see what's down there," he whispers to me.

I smile. "Go ahead. I'll be with Toriel."

He goes downstairs, and I walk into the living room. "Tori-"

I notice that no one is here. I walk to the kitchen. No one. I run to Toriel's bedroom, but no one is in the bed. I gasp. She's in the basement.

I run down the stairs. "Niko!"

I run down a long hallway, then turn a few corners. I see Toriel standing in front of a door. Niko is standing behind her. "This is the gateway to the rest of the Underground. I am going to destroy it. Please go back upstairs."

Niko looks up at her. "No. I wanna see my Mom!"

Toriel turns around, then gasps looking at me. "Frisk..."

Niko turns to me. "Frisk?"

"You're going to destroy our only way out?" I ask. "What kind of mom does that?"

She glares at me. "A sane one. I've seen too many children go through this door, never to return. The king killed them all."

"He won't kill us. I promised to protect Niko. If you're going to fight him to make him go back upstairs, you're gonna have to get through me."

I walk to Niko and stand in front of him. He gulps. "You can do it, Frisk."

Tears appear in Toriel's eyes. "You foolish children. I'm trying to protect you."

"By leaving us here?"

I reach my arms out to both sides of my body. "Go on then! If you're so capable of forcing us to stay here, then you'll have no trouble punishing your child! Hit me!"

Toriel gasps, shaking. I step closer to her. "Hit me!"

She blasts fire at me, but it passes by my head, not hitting me. I get closer. "If you can't deal with a troublesome child, you can't be making decisions for us. I know that deep down, you know that."

She uses her fire magic again, but misses again. I get closer to her again. I'm three paces from her. I look at her, ready to receive a punishment for my disobedience. She does nothing. More tears form in her eyes. I take two steps; one pace left. My arms are still reach away from either side of me. I take one more step. She is crying now. I hug her. She drops to her knees and embraces me. Niko runs over to us and squeezes his way in, hugging Toriel. "My children... don't leave me."

I see tears in Niko's eyes as he lets go. I join him. Toriel looks up at us and gasps, crying even more. Niko grabs my hand and smiles at Toriel. "I promise we'll be safe," he says, his voice shaking from crying.

I close my eyes. "I'm sorry, Toriel. We need to leave."

Toriel stands up, nodding. She wipes tears from her eyes. "You're right. I'm being selfish. You two have families to get back to."

She starts walking away. "Please... don't come back."

I watch as she walks away. I grab Niko's hand and look at him. He smiles at me, and I smile back. "Let's go."

We step through the door, walking down a long hallway before reaching another large door. I feel a chilly breeze passing through the cracks. I take a deep breath and push the door open.
