Niko tightens his grip on my hand as we walk into the marshy lands beyond Snowdin. I feel the chill in the air give way to the moist, murky air of this new area. While walking through some tall grass, I hear metallic footsteps that immediately make Niko and I stop in our tracks. I focus on the footsteps, hearing another pair.
"H-hi, Undyne!" Papyrus says. "I'm here with my daily report."
Niko gasps lightly, but Papyrus's voice is enough to mask it at least. "Uh... regarding that human I called you about earlier–"
"Did you fight them?" I hear Undyne ask.
"Did I fight them? Y-yes! Of course I did! I fought them valiantly!"
"Did you capture them?"
"...Did I capture them? W-w-well... no. I tried very hard, Undyne, but in the end, I failed..."
"If you failed, then I'll take the humans' souls myself."
"W-what?! But Undyne! You don't have to destroy them!" His voice becomes fainter. "You see... you see..."
"Papyrus, stop blabbering, or I relieve you from duty!"
There's silence for a long while after that. "...I understand. I'll help you in any way I can."
Niko starts walking, rustling the tall grass we're in. I immediately hear faster footsteps from on the cliff, but the damage has already been done. Niko rushes out of the grass, already afraid. I run after him, making it to him right before Undyne hits the ground behind us.
The armored monster stomps forward, creating a blue spear in her hand. I turn back towards Undyne, guarding Niko with my very life. I grit my teeth. "Let us go!"
"I must deliver your souls to Asgore. I won't feel any mercy in killing the two of you though. You're just vicious humans!" she shouts.
"We're not like what you think!"
"Enough!" She raises the spear, readying to hurl it towards the two of us. "Die!"
I just barely dodge the attack, pulling Niko out of the way with me. Niko looks at me. "Frisk, I can help!"
I shake my head. "No, I'll protect you!"
Niko pouts, but he complies, jumping out of the way of another spear. Undyne roars in anger. "NGAH!!! Stop dodging!"
I smirk, grabbing Niko's hand. "Get ready," I whisper.
She hurls another spear towards us, and we both dodge. "Run!" I command.
Niko darts in front of me, outrunning me as we run deeper into the marsh. "Get back here!" Undyne shouts as her labored, metallic footsteps slowly fade away as we put more distance between us.
Niko stops running, panting as he catches his breath. He sits down by a rock, watching a waterfall in the distance. I sit beside him, smiling at him. "You doing alright?"
He nods. "I'm fine," he says, giving me a smile.
I stand up. "We should get moving before Undyne catches up with us."
"But I'm tired," he says, pouting a bit.
I sigh. "How about I give you a piggyback ride?"
His eyes go wide as he beams with joy. "Yes!"
I smile and lift him up to my shoulders, making him giggle a bit. I continue walking through the marsh as Niko slowly begins to doze off.
The serene quiet of the area begins to soothe my very soul. The combination of the tranquil running water, the gentle breeze, and the slow breathing of the sleeping Niko is a very peaceful one. Though the two of us have been sent into this strange, dangerous land, it certainly has its charms. I think about home, and I remember that Niko has to get home to his mother. I nod and pick up the pace a bit, filled with determination.
