I am blasted with cold air as the door opens. Niko gets closer, trying to keep warm. After the initial wave of chilliness, I look out at the land before us. A long path stretches out before us. The path is walled in by tall, leafless trees. Niko tightens his grip on my hand. "Let's go," he says.
We start walking down the path. As we walk, the air seems to get colder, but I feel something nagging at me. I have a feeling that someone's... watching us. I glance over my shoulder, but see nothing. A large tree branch is on the path ahead on us. Niko and I step over it and continue walking. I hear a loud crack. Niko screams and I jump around. The branch is broken into several pieces. I grab Niko's hand again. "Let's get out of here."
He nods and we fast a bit faster. As we walk, I hear crunching in the snow behind us, as if someone's walking on it. I look over my shoulder and see a silhouette quickly fade away. I pick up the pace, nearly pulling Niko along. As we reach a bridge, I freeze. I can't move a muscle. Niko is frozen as well. I hear the footsteps coming closer and closer by the second. They finally reach us, stopping right behind us. "What's wrong?" a male asks. "Don't you know how to greet a new pal?" He pauses. "Turn around and shake my hand."
I feel my body moving on its own as I turn to face the figure. My vision goes darker and I reach out to his hand. I grasp the... hand? It feels almost skeletal, but my thoughts are shattered as I hear a loud farting noise. Niko nearly breaks out into laughter. My vision goes clear and I regain control over my body. A skeleton wearing a blue jacket, a white t-shirt, shorts, and pink slippers stands in front of me. He laughs. "The old whoopie cushion in the hand joke. Gets 'em every time." He puts his hands in his pockets. "I'm Sans. Sans the Skeleton."
I wave. "Hi there. My name's Frisk." I pat Niko's hat. "This is Niko. We're trying to find a way out of this place."
Sans nods. "I figured. After all, you two are human. I'm sure my brother Papyrus would love to meet you... and capture you."
Niko smiles. "Can I meet your brother?"
Sans chuckles. "I never figured I'd hear that from a human before." He pats Niko's hat as well. "If you want to."
I smile. "Shall we get going?"
Sans shrugs. "If you guys want to meet Papyrus, go ahead. He should be just up ahead. I catch you guys later."
He turns around and walks in the opposite direction. I look down at Niko. "Let's go meet Papyrus."
Niko grins, elated to meet another monster. He runs ahead of me as we continue down the path. We continue until we see a checkpoint station. A lamp that looks somewhat like me is standing there. Sans is sleeping in a chair in the checkpoint. I look back. "Didn't he-?"
Niko shrugs. I see a figure walking towards us. It's wearing white armor and has red gloves, red boots, and a red scarf. It's another skeleton: Papyrus. He walks here and eyes Niko and I for a few seconds. "What peculiar lamps..." he mumbles. He turns to Sans. "Sans! Wake up, you lazy bones!"
Sans yawns and opens his eyes. "Hey Paps. I got two more lamps, did you see?"
Papyrus groans. "Yes, I saw; however, you still haven't recalibrated your puzzles!"
"Oh, those? I'm too interested in my lamps. Why don't you take a closer look at them?"
"NO! I will not look at them! What if a human comes through here?! You can't just sit around all day and boondoggle!"
Sans shrugs. "You know Paps, you're right. I should start working myself down..." He grins. "To the bone."
I snicker, but Papyrus doesn't even notice. "Sans!"
"What's wrong bro?"
"I hate that you never get any work done!"
"What are you talking about? I've gotten a ton of work done." He grins. "A skele-ton."
Papyrus roars in anger. "Enough!" He starts walking away. "You know, you should really put a bit more backbone into your work. Nyeh heh heh heh heh!" He starts walking away, then turns back. "HEH!"
He walks away and Sans stands up. "Nice work standing still you guys."
Niko finally breaks, laughing at the jokes. I chuckle and pat his head. He smiles at Sans, closing his eyes. The green soul appears in front of him again. Sans and I look at it in awe. It disappears right before he opens his eyes. Sans grins at me. "If you show that soul to other monsters, kid... You're gonna have a bad time," he says laughing.
I gasp and clutch my heart. It's throbbing in pain! I open my eyes and see dust everywhere. I hear Sans grunting and something hard stabbing into walls. I hear blasts of something, followed by a girl screaming in pain. Then, I hear her laughing. Sans screams in agony, forcing me back into reality.
I gasp and put my hands on the ground, catching myself. I don't even feel the cold of the snow. I pant as I try to remember what I just saw before it fades from my mind. Niko is shaking me. "Frisk! Are you okay?!"
Sans in on one knee. "Are you alright, kid?"
I nod. "I'm... fine. It's nothing."
"I hope so," Sans says, somewhat worried.
I stand back up and recollect myself. I look down at Niko and smile. "Let's get going."
Sans pats me on the back. "Take care, kids," he says before walking back to his post.
Niko and I start walking down the path, not even remotely prepared to discover what lives here. I see a small creature walk by. It has a giant icicle on its head. "Look at my hat," it commands.
"Sorry. We have to get going," I say.
"I wasn't asking, human!"
He fires some icicles at me and Niko. I push Niko to the ground and jump to the side. Niko sits back up, then yelps. He lies back down, dodging another wave of icicles. I stand up, not caring to brush the snow on my sweater away. I try to think of a way to get him to leave us alone. In my distraction, I hear the monster shout. "Hey, look at my awesome hat!"
I gasp, then turn to Niko. "Let's get going."
Niko looks at me in confusion, then smiles. "Yeah. Let's head to Snowdin."
"Hey! Do you guys even see me?!"
I hear icicles blast at us. I pick up the pace, getting out of range. As we turn the corner, I still hear the angry shouts of the monster. Niko and I sit down and laugh. "I can't believe that worked!" I say.
Niko smiles. "Yeah. I hope every monster we find is this easy to avoid."
"Yeah. We shouldn't h-"
I can't finish my sentence. "Hu-... What the...?"
Why can't I say it? What's going on. I see a girl giggling as she runs behind the trees. She's wearing a green and yellow sweater, but before I can say anything, she runs out of my sight. I look around for her. "Niko, where'd that girl go?"
"Girl?"
"The one that was laughing."
"No one laughed, Frisk."
I look at him. "What do you mean?"
"No one laughed. It's only the two of us here."
"Maybe I'm just hungry." I stand up. "Let's get to Snowdin already."
He nods, standing up and brushing the snow off of his coat. We continue walking down the path.
