Chapter Nine - The Long Journey Home
Friday. The day before my awakening. I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to feel about it, honestly. After all, Griffin told me not to be scared and to accept it.
I rushed to the bathroom before my siblings got there and took a quick shower. I got dressed casually, not seeing the need to dress up then headed downstairs to breakfast. Brandon was there with Dad and Stepford-Mother who was making breakfast. Brandon looked up at me surprised.
"What?" I asked and took a seat.
"Thought you'd be at your mate's house for sure," Brandon said. I frowned when I thought about why I wasn't there and cast Brandon a fake smile.
"Dad said I needed two and a half days here," I said. Dad gave me a wary glance.
"How's your bruising?" He asked warily.
I clenched my jaw briefly. "It's healing," I said. "Slowly." Too slow.
Dad nodded. Brandon handed me my daily pill and a glass of juice. I didn't object, I just took it. I then sighed.
"Friday," I murmured. "I really would like to stay home."
Both Brandon and Dad perked up at the same time. "Really?"
"Yeah," I frowned. I just didn't want to see Griffin today. Not if we were going to have another argument.
"Well, it's reasonable seeing as her awakening is tomorrow," Brandon vouched. Dad nodded.
"Alright," he said. "You can stay home."
I gave them both soft smiles. "Thank you."
Stepford-Mother came in with breakfast and set it down. I ate slowly. My other siblings ran downstairs and rushed into the dining room to eat. I stared at them impassively. I had noticed Brandon was watching me. When all of the kids had gone, and Dad and left to ready for work, and Stepford-Mother left, Brandon finally spoke.
"What's been going on?" He asked.
I furrowed my brow.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I murmured.
"Stay home?" Brandon repeated, "Sam, we all know you're the one who goes to school just to get away from everyone here. Not going to school means you don't want to see Auron, so what's been going on?"
Fuck him for being such a quick detector.
"Nothing," I said shrugging.
I felt his shrewd glare. I clenched my jaw. "Bullshit," he said sharply.
I turned to him. "Maybe I don't want to tell you, Brandon."
He laughed. "Do you think I care?" He asked with a raised brow. "If it concerns you, I'm going to know."
That was Brandon. Persistent and curt.
"He looks at me like a science project," I murmured. "He hates what I look like and it bothers me. I have tried to understand, you know, but I can't. He just... we've been fighting, so I came home, I don't want to see him. Not until my bruises are gone."
Brandon nodded and got up.
"Wait, where are you going?" I asked him.
"Back to bed."
I gaped at him. "You weren't going to give me any advice?!"
"I never said anything about advice. I don't have any advice for that. I understand your point, and his. So, see ya."
