Ok so I know complex shit is cool and all. But fuck that. I get it. You wanna blow your readers minds with some epic ass plot twist. That's all well in good but don't be stupid with it. Don't make major things happen for no reason. Even the most well known authors are guilty of this. Like Rick Riordan (bless his soul) I love his world building, but he sucks ass at romance. But I’ll make romance a topic for a different chapter. Anyway a good example of unorganized plot/major character development *MAJOR SPOILER WARNING DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU* is in the fourth instalment of The Heroes of Olympus series titled The House of Hades. Basically Nico and Jason are fighting Cupid to get the scepter of Diocletian and blah blah blah plot stuff. But how they have to get it is interesting. The only way to beat love is to admit to it (this poetic mofo is tryin to be cute with his symbolism). So Nico has to confess he loves Percy (I mean me to). Now look I kinda get why he did it. He was trying to be progressive by adding a gay character while I guess “expanding” Nicos character. The problem is he didnt know where he was going with it. He sorta just put it in his book and watched what happens. So now a lot of people are like “Holy shit they'd  be some cute ass fanfic material.” And to that I say they totally are. Now I feel like Rick kinda regretted it and had a total “No Percabeth for life my ship is the only ship rrreeEEEEEEE” moment. So he had to, I guess, “fix it.” So out comes trial of Apollo……. Now look I don't hate Will ok but like god damn the hole Will and Nico thing seemed like a lazy cop out to people trying to turn Percy into a gay lord. And for those of you who don't read Rick Riordans works basically what he did is he had a main character come out, admiting he was in love with the main protagonists. Now everybody saw them as an item which was not the intended purpose so to fix this he made him just stop being in love with the protagonist and made him go with the a side character he had almost no prior interactions with and had little to no run time in the story. So we have one super fleshed out character and then we have a side character that had almost no use till now. Now look Will and Nico ARE cute together but the whole way this was gone about was messy and unorganized. This could have been prevented if the author thought ahead before he made the move. Never initiate a major plot point without knowing where its going. You'll just scramble the plot like fucking eggs that where lazily made and still have shells in them, and then your eating them and you find a hair in it that's too long to be yours and you live alone with no pets so you lock the doors cause you think somebody's been in your house.

Anyway so yeah stay organized and just plan things out. I know it's tempting to have your character randomly develop super cancer and die for the sake of a plot twist, but do everybody a favor. Don't.
