Uugggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Ok. So. Don’t be a simple bitch. Done.
Ok but actual there's nothing wrong with common fanfiction tropes. At first coffee shop au’s where a cute idea. But goddamn they’re everywhere. It’s like Frozen. I liked the movie when it came out, and I still like it. But holy shit if I see that hoe on another 5 year olds shirt I’m gonna scream. Same concept. And this doesn't just apply to coffee shop au’s. It’s also Werewolf au’s, omegaverses, vampire au’s, college au’s, company CEO au’s, etc. Now don’t get me wrong there's nothing wrong with writing in these settings. Honestly you’ll probably get reads on the grounds that its a coffee shop au and Everybody loves coffee shop au’s. But like that almost seems like selling out to me. Don’t get me wrong if you have an awesome plot that makes your CEO au different from the million others, by all means do it. I’m not shitting on the concepts of the au’s, just the oversaturation. You just have to advertise it in away that gets the idea that yours in unique. That way it gets the attention of the reader rather than them ignoring it. Either that or wright in a unique au. Examples. Voltron: Dance au. Homestuck: Marching band au. Percy Jackson: Ancient greece au (which nobody ever does). Harry Potter: Scientist au. Really you can put the characters in any setting as long as it’s not stupid. It’s all about marketing. You want to advertise the story not the setting. If you want people to read you need to portray it as entertaining. If the only thing in your description is “Keith and Lance. Two college students looking for love. Will they find?” that doesn't give much context to the story. There's no incentive to read it. Personally I’d love for authors to experiment with setting. It can make things really entertaining. Like you could make the characters knights, or wizards, or space cadets. So many possibilities. But no we gotta be relatable teens and have them make coffee. Which I think is a crock of shit. A story doesn't have to relatable to be good. For example. Like all anime. Blue Exorcist, great show. But nothing about it is relatable to me considering I'm not a demon trying to get through life as an exorcist. The job of an author is to write not to relate.
