1984 - The Penthouse, California

Brenda ("Monty")

"Why were you onstage with Michael and his brothers the other night? I saw footage on television." Prince folded his arms while standing in the living room.

Luggage surrounded him as we waited for the limousine to pick him up.

"Maybe I wanted to have some fun on my own. Plus, it was a great concert, Skip." My eyes quickly narrowed.

"Okay, but was the gig better than mine?" Prince stepped closer towards me. I wasn't even intimidated.

"I wouldn't say that." I reassured him. My own boot heel clicked forward as well.

"All right. Just promise that you'll behave while I'm gone." Prince kissed deeply after declaring his words. I hugged around his slim waist, burying my face into his chest.

"Yes, and the same rule applies to you." We then kissed for the second time and I brushed my nose against his.

"Of course. Monty, I'm never leaving you again." Prince soon held onto my face with both hands.

"I know you won't." My voice whispered. The elevator door to my living room chimed open and countless assistant emerged.

Even Big Chick and other bodyguards also helped Prince adjust for the trip ahead. I stood nearby, waiting as expected.

"You could always travel with me." Prince offered his suggestion for the last time. I rolled my eyes, but smiled.

"No thanks, Baby." I repeated for the umpteenth time. There was no other choice.

"Call me if you want to see a show. Love you, Mama." While employees rolled various suitcases out of here, Prince wouldn't stop blushing.

"Love you, too." I laughed to myself when Prince stuck out his tongue at me. I rolled my eyes, but smiled one final time at this point. My best friend  was so silly and I loved every single hilarious minute.

Silence filled the room as he left me alone. I already missed his intoxicating presence.

___

I laughed out watching a tape of the show one night. My complexion shined as that televison brightened. I could barely fight back the smile on my face at this point.

Prince kicked off the breakdown of "Baby, I'm A Star" again and unexpectedly revealed some of my moves from "Soul Train."

I've shuffled and locked onscreen for three years. It was literally the best feeling in this entire
world to know that my man, a musical genius, noticed.

Even if I didn't visit Prince on tour now, we promised each other to be dates for award season next year. Both the American Music Awards and Grammy ceremonies were essential, if nowhere else.

As for the wedding, Patrice still helped out. Now, it was a matter of me picking the right gown. I'd go barefoot for the white sand that glorious day.

I couldn't even see prototypes for Prince's suit by now All in the element of surprise.

Mom, Dad and my youngest sister Jasmine promised attendance.

Of course, my parents couldn't believe the relationship with Skip. Especially considering his playboy ways.

But his proposal to me shut everyone up. The devotion immediately captivated Mom and reassured Dad.

"No more games. Your daughter means everything to me." Prince vowed to my father on the telephone.

I've never felt so happy.

***

Prince called around midnight after performing once again. I could easily tell that he wasn't occupied with parties or thankfully seeing other women.

"Busy at the studio?" I smiled while sitting alone in my bedroom again.

Earlier that day, I'd taped an episode of "Soul Train" and finished one television interview for later that week.

"Always. What are you doing?" Prince sighed out loud this time. I shook my head, preferring that he was home with me. Sleeping in my arms.

"Finally home again. It's been a long day, Skip." I shook my head in response. This man never stopped working and neither would I.

"I can tell. Anyway, the show was real good. You would've loved it." Prince laughed to himself before long. I even yawned for a moment, but we both knew better.

"I'm sure. Tell everybody I said hi, okay? Good night, Skip." I promised him. But as much as I wanted to reach the next plane and see him again, I needed to finish out this year on my own.

"Wait. What's wrong? You don't usually hang up this early." Prince most likely narrowed his eyes in person right now. Even though I definitely couldn't view his facial expressions.

"Baby, I'm fine. I just don't want to get in the way of you recording. You know how this works better than me." I tried to reassure him again.

"Mo, come on. Didn't you always tell me that if we don't communicate, this'll never work? Whatever you need to say is fine. Please don't hide anything from me, especially now." Prince lowered his deep voice even more and deemed absolutely serious.

"Do you still want kids someday?" I honestly began to smile all over again.

"Of course. Why?" Prince heightened the tone of usually intoxicating his voice. I just knew that my best friend grinned without hesitation.

"I'm pregnant." I teared up with joy while staring down at my engagement ring.
