Patrice

I knocked three times before Michael answered. Awkward silence filled the hallway at this point. Jackson had already closed the door behind him.

I stepped back in my heels to open space between us and my heart simply fumed with rage.

I didn't know what to think as Jackson folded both arms while observing me.

His eyes narrowed in the name of confusion. I'd clearly interrupted his line of concentration.

So what? I thought to myself. I faked one smile after another while some engineers and producers walked to enter countless other rooms in this hallway.

"What's wrong? I'm working, Baby." Michael whispered and narrowed his eyes once more.

Another round of awkward silence fell between us. Once again, my heart raged with both anger and sadness.

I wanted to slap him and never see this man again. Enough was enough by now.

My heart just couldn't take the ongoing neglect anymore, but recent "news" turned out to be the final straw.

"Call your ex. I'm done with you." I teared up, walking away. Michael knew exactly who I meant. There was no doubt in my mind.

"Baby, where are you going? What are you talking about?" Michael called out to me, but I didn't even care.

"Fuck you!" My heels stomped right out of the building. No shame whatsoever.

"Baby, I don't understand." Michael struggled to talk without trembling his words. Absolutely pathetic.

"Call Brenda. Now!" I shouted without hesitation. My voice should've echoed from the walls or something.

"Why are you leaving me? What happened?" Michael shook his head. I fought another urge to slap him right now.

"I'm tired of being ignored. And if you really don't love me, say it and leave." I admitted that truth to him.

"Baby Girl, I'm so sorry." Michael opened both arms to hold me, but I immediately flinched away.

"Don't you dare call me that!" I screamed again.  My mind thank heavens that everyone else seemed to scatter away in the name of our privacy.

"Patrice, I love you so much. We've had issues, but I never cheated." Michael failed to hold me once more.

"Stop lying to me." My nose sniffled for the umpteenth time in that moment.

"I'm not lying, Baby. Look at me." Michael whispered back. I could even hear when crickets chirped outside.

"No. I can't do this anymore." I unzipped my purse and fished out this folded piece of paper.

"What's this?" Michael questioned without touching me. I'd already shoved the evidence right into his chest.

There was no other choice given the circumstances. I couldn't even stand to look at him anymore.

"An ultrasound." I whispered one last time before finally walking away from Michael.

Michael

I paced back and forth in the bedroom while this telephone shook in my hand.

Information printed below the ultrasound picture revealed a name for the baby.

Nicole.

"Hello?" B responded with the harsh accent I'd known for three years.   My heart dropped.

"Hey, I know what happened. Patrice gave me your ultrasound photograph. But how do you know this is even my baby? Before long, I spoke up. Fuming in every sense of the word at this point.

"You really don't remember fucking me that night? Sometime after the Grammy's, you showed up to my house, we argued and then..."  The picture still trembled in my hand.

Shit! I thought to myself. This is my baby. No matter what.

Tears almost seeped from my eyes, but I refused to break down again.

Brenda didn't even know that Patrice left me for good now and probably wouldn't care at all.

I completely understood why at this point.

"How does Prince feel?" I shook my head while questioning. My mind didn't even know what to think.

"It took quite some time to think about, but he's not divorcing me, believe it or not. He said it would've crushed him to leave now that I'm pregnant. Even though Nicole isn't even his child." Brenda her accent turned rougher than expected. As if she fought back tears.

"He's a good man and I've already said that you'll be a wonderful mother." I paced once more and lowered my head.

"Thank you. We both promised you visiting, obviously. And I've already hired nannies. Now, we just have to wait." Brenda wouldn't even perk up her voice while explaining details.

"What about your family?" I now sat on the edge of this lonely and messy bed, simply listening.

"Dad hates you, Mom is disappointed in me, and my sister Jasmine almost went to the hospital after blacking out. Paramedics showed up and everything." Brenda sighed out loud this time. My heart just sank.

"I'm so sorry." I lowered my head, ashamed once more. Silence filled the room again and I nearly choked on tears.

"Save the apologises. Can you just promise to help me make this work? I don't want drama to interfere with this baby." Brenda vowed despite the absolute pain in her heart.

"Of course." I nodded feverishly. My mind then  concentrated directly on our goal of parenthood.

I'd spend the rest of my life ensuring that the little angel was happy.
