The next day at school I couldn't focus. I needed to know more about the house… Maybe, just maybe. I could convince Angelica or Elizabeth to talk to me, they might tell me something to help but my eager mind to rest.
As soon as school was out I started walking at a clipped pace, far enough I didn't think that anyone would notice me.
I sat down on a small wooden park bench near the main path, I saw a new ghost, he was tall, a large fluffy ponytail protruded from the back of his head, he seemed to be singing a french lullaby of some sort. I could see the faint traces of navy blue and red, almost like smoke, trailing behind him.
I watched him wandering along the bank of the pond, a bulky man soon joined him, and they wandered hand in hand around the pond. Soon enough I saw the familiar pink ghost, Angelica, I assume.
I walk up to her uncertain of how I would communicate. I pull out a piece of paper and quickly scribble out Angelica?
She looks at me, fear flickering through her eyes.
“Y-Yes?” She stutters, her voice still sounding like silk. It was fairly low but still very nice.
Sorry, I’m mute I write out after a moment of hesitation, she nods at me to go on. I'm terribly sorry if it scares you to talk to me. I just wanted to know, why am I the only one who can see you guys? There are so many of you but nobody else notices I write while she watches me warily. She shrugged, “I have no idea. It could simply be because you believe in us, or that you're still young. Really anything.”
Also why are you actually talking to me, is there some sort of rule that you can't talk to living humans or is it just not something that you do? I write out slowly, unsure of how to word it. She shrugged again.
“I think it's more something you just don't do, there isn't really anything against it but if you hadn't looked at me with my name specifically written out I definitely wouldn't have stayed to talk.” With that she disappeared and I was alone. The ghostly couple long since vanished.
I sat frowning for a little bit, mulling over her words. She was definitely very well educated and was obviously Angelica, she had specifically confirmed it, I just didn’t know what to do with my small amount of information.
I made it home a touch later than I normally would have if I had come straight home. I dropped all my stuff in my room and went out the backdoor.
There were two more ghosts. Both looked to be about six or seven and they were playing in the flower beds. Angelica and John were both there this time. Angelica gave me a slight smile when she saw me and John just kept talking to Angelica.
I didn’t blame them, it was a very warm fall day. Although the wind was brisk you couldn’t really feel it in the shelter of the backyard. A little ways away Maria was pulling up flowers, preparing for the frost that was bound to come soon. Standing next to the pretty girl was the ghost named Elizabeth. They were having a conversation.
That’s why Maria stays, she can see them.
I smiled, she stayed for the ghosts.
Everywhere I turned I could see other ghosts. Sitting in the boughs of a large tree were two ghosts, one in turquoise and one in yellow, the one in turquoise holding a baby.
I slowly walked back into the house, everything I had seen sending shivers down my spine. This house was amazing, but all the ghosts still seemed young, as if they hadn’t grown up, the baby, still dead. Why were they all dead?
