Chapter 18 (part one)
I walked in the house and threw down my bag. The already broken zipper snapped and I watched as my books and homework spilled out onto the welcome mat. I stared at it a second, then the phone rang. Shrugging, I kicked the discarded contents to the side and walked into the kitchen, humming under my breath.
"Hello?" I answered with a smile.
"Hey Baby, how's everything going?"
I smiled even wider after hearing my mom's voice, having not heard from them since they left almost a week ago. "Great Mom. Are you and dad having a good trip?"
"We are. Thanks for asking, Hun." She paused. "Why are you so happy? I was expecting more..."
"More... what?"
"Complaining. I was fully prepared to listen to a rant about how Rose made you, I don't know, scrub the floors or something."
"Eh," I shrugged, "It's been fine."
"Really?" Mom asked, doubt in her voice.
"Really." I giggled.
My mom didn't respond for a second, but when she did confusion laced her words. "And nothing's happened?", then, "Ricki Laila Young, I swear if you threw a party, or if their was a boy, or-"
I heard my dad's shout cut her off in the background. "A boy?! What about a boy? Did she have one over while we weren't there?"
I shook my head before remembering they couldn't see me. "No, calm down! No parties and no boys."
Another pause. "Oh. Then why are you so happy?"
"Can I not be happy, or is it illegal now?" I rolled my eyes. "But there is a guy..."
"Ooh," my mom cooed. "Who is it? Is it anyone we know? Is he cute? Have you guys-"
"Ew, Mom, no!"
"I was gonna say kissed," Mom said, a smirk smirk evident even over the phone.
My dad's voice cut in again. "Kissed?! What is this about kissing?!"
"Calm down, Honey, I was joking," then back to me, "But have you?"
I sighed, my mood from the news of Aaden's upcoming presence to the dance deflated slightly with that one question. "No."
"Why not?"
"He... says we need to stay away from each other."
"Good!"
"David, stop listening!"
"...Fine."
I laughed at my parent's antics, suddenly missing them more.
"Sorry Ric, what were you saying?" Mom asked me.
I pursed my lips, thinking. "He says he needs to stay away from me."
"Why is that?"
"I don't know, maybe he doesn't like me like I like him," I said, hoping to goodness I was wrong and Aaden felt at least a little attraction to me. Why this boy held so much power over me, I'd never know. It was like the first time we saw each other I felt like I was missing a piece of me, one that could only be filled with him. Aaden was like a mystery that needed to be solved, and I would crack it. I relayed these feeling over the phone to my mom, who was patiently listening.
