How I Punctuate Thoughts

This chapter is a bit of an extension of the last one which discussed dialogue. I've never actually learned how to punctuate thoughts, but this is the method I use and I've seen it several places.

I always punctuate character thoughts the same way I punctuate dialogue. However, instead of using quotation marks, I put the thought in italics.

These examples come from Trenton Lee Stewart's The Mysterious Benedict Society.

Poison apples, poison worms, Reynie thought.

 Martina's poisoned us! Reynie thought.
