This is the second troop that you can unlock and you need to upgrade your barracks to level 2 to be able to train them. This troop is the first troop to unlock that uses a ranged weapon. this is good for taking things out without having to destroy those pesky walls. the best way to use archers is to send in some high health troops such as giants first to distract and destroy the defences and then send the in the archers to loot the storages.
