They wouldn't let me see you.

They said you were having a bad day.

But I just had to see you. So I devised a distraction that had the nurse rushing from your room, and finally I was able to see you.

And the sight of you . . . felt like getting hit by a bus.

Your beautiful colors were nearly gone. The canvas I had painted upon was slowly crumbling.

So I asked you.

"What will I do without you?"

You never answered me. Just the sound of monitors filled the deafening silence. Just the audible cracking of my heart filled the silence. Just the sound of my pain filled the silence.

So I asked you again.

"What will I do without you?"

You must have heard me. You're eyes weakly fluttered open as you peered up at me, and even then, you still smiled at me so beautiful. How could I lose you? How could I lose your beautiful colors?

So you replied simply.

"You'll live like you always have. Beautifully."

I moved closer to you and gently took your hand into mine. I kissed it as tears filled my eyes. I held it to my lips.

You sighed.

So I asked you.

"Are you in pain?"

You smiled, but I saw your pain. And you replied simply.

"Never when I'm with you."

You lied to me. You lied to me so you wouldn't hurt me.

But you still hurt me.

And I couldn't help you.

So I told you.

"I'm so sorry."

Your eyes filled with tears.

You so rarely cried now, and it broke me.

I'm so sorry.

I love you. I'll miss you.

Forever.
