While the rest of the senior girls stayed on stage I told Laura a lie. That I had felt my period starting and I needed to go to my locker for a tampon. I said all this in a whisper in her ear while also trying to keep my voice from breaking into a sob.
She let me go not needing any further explanation.
I felt those familiar eyes one me as I left. I just didn't know why it felt familiar.
I walked out the gym doors and back into the cold Autumn air. I quickened my pace and walked towards the main building, I could feel the tears starting to fall. I reached my locker and huddled to my knees glad that no one was around to see me cry.
While I was crying the smell in the hall became intoxicating. I looked up from my knees and saw Gavin looking at me a few feet away.
"Misty," he said slowly approaching me,"why are you crying?"
"I'm not crying, you're crying" I defensively said wipping the tears from my cheeks.
"Misty, tell me why you're crying, please." He said now kneeling in front of me.
"I heard you."
"What?"
"I heard you call me stupid when you walked me to class this morning." I said looking away from him.
"You heard me?"He said with a tone of disbelief.
"Yeah I did. And I don't like being called names." I said slapping his hands away that were reaching towards my face.
"Shit!, No, Misty I wasn't calling you stupid, honest!" He said with a look of hurt in his eyes.
"You weren't?" I said letting him wipe away the rest of my tears.
"No, I was calling myself stupid." He said lifting me up so that I was kneeling infront of him with my face against his chest. Now wrapped in his arms he hugged me tight., "I was stupid to introduce myself. I mean we've had a couple of classes together and of course I knew you were in my homeroom class too."
I was too comfortable in his arms to say anything back.
"Please don't cry because of me." He said while rubbing my back.
After loosening his grip I looked up at his hazel green eyes.
He looked away running a hand threw his hair before shyly saying, "I was actually wanting to ask you to the homecoming dance tonight."
I was shook.
"So, what do you say? You feel like going with me to the dance?"
"Sure." I said still shook. But I wasnt able to say more as people started to flood the halls clearing indicating that the assembly was over.
"Great." He said with a boyish smile on his face. He helped me get up into a standing position. He gave me one last look before quickly leaving me to go back to his own locker or maybe back to class.
My next two classes went by faster than expected. I felt my eyes glaze over a couple of times as I kept remembering Gavins' smell and the way I felt comfortable in his arms.
As I was walking towards the football field after school. I spotted Gavin in his full football gear. He gave me that sweet boyish smile of his making me blush.
The voice inside my head purred which freaked me out because she's never once done that.
What are you a cat? Why'd you purr?
How dare you call me a cat?
Clearly she didn't understand what I was saying, why'd you do that?
Do what?
Oh, come on. You purred at his smile.
Oh, I don't know, did I, I didn't notice.
I quickly blocked her out again because I had to concentrate on my routine.
"You know don't flatter yourself."
The voice came from one of the tall thin senior cheerleaders, Anna.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh please don't play innocent." The other tall senior cheerleaders huddled around her, "once he gets in your pants he'll drop you like the rest of the girls who've approached him, but honey," she said walking closer to me, "he always comes back to me." She said bumping into my shoulder.
I was triggered.
Who did this girl think she is? If it wasn't for the game about to start I would have... well I'm not sure what I would have done but definitely something not pretty.
Most of the students arriving back to watch the homecoming game sported our school colors, black and yellow. A few of the more crazy students painted their faces a mix of patterns of bright yellow and black.
Each time Gavin ran back to the bench to get the next play from his coach he would smile back at me, which, only caused more dirty looks from Anna and her friends.
After the final buzz came from the scoreboard, loud air horns went off. It was a victorious night for our team the Wolverines. We won 24-18.
Students and parents flouded up the field. After a couple of minutes passed I was dissmissed from staying which meant I was finally able to walk back towards the parking lot. As I turned on the Jeep a knock came from the window. I looked up surprised to see a sweaty Gavin smiling back at me.
I buzzed the window down.
"Hey, so I wanted to catch you before you left?" He said even with all that running he wasn't out of breath, "I just wanted to tell you that I'll be picking you up for the dance." He said staring at me but avoiding my gaze, he was blushing nervously.
"Sure. Here let me give you my address" reaching towards my bookbag for a pencil and paper.
"No. I know where you live. I'll get there a bit after 9, if that's ok."
Maybe it was that he said it but I was ashamed of him knowing where I lived. It was no secret that I lived in a Wayward Home. It was just a touchy subject for me.
Trying my best to give him a smile I agreed at him picking me up to take me to the dance.
I almost didn't know how I made it home. But I quickly stepped inside walking up the stairs to get ready.
