I waited for Amaya in the old tree house. My dad built if for my sister and I when we were kids. Back in the simpler times where we didn't have so much stress. A time when everything was right. We had so much fun in it. But now it's just used for when we want to get high, cry or just to be alone and think.
It was a pretty big tree house. It was tall enough of me to stand without hitting my head. It was wide enough to fit about 5 adult sized people. We had to take out the little tables and chairs because none of us could fit on them anymore. It was a good distance away from the house, so if it fell, it wouldn't hit the house.
"Your dad is a giant piece of shit." I said as Amaya opened the tree house door.
"I know," Amaya took the beer from my hand and chugged it down.
I watched as she did. When she finally came up for air she started shaking,"You ok?"
"Yea, just got the shivers."
I got up and got the ice pack from the small cooler I'd brought up here before she got here. She looked in the cooler and grabbed two more beers. Amaya drowned them in seconds,"That's not gonna help."
"It will for now."
We sat in silence for a while. I studied her face. Her eyes were glossy and her face was red. Her thick hair was a mess and clothes were falling off.
She shut her eyes as I put an ice pack on the one that got hit,"He makes me so mad." She said as I kneeled in front of her.
"I don't understand why you still stay with him." I felt my eye twitch,"we have more than enough evidence to lock him up for domestic violence."
"No."
"Amaya-"
"I said no Nick, just drop it!" She went to open another bottle, but I took it from her.
"That's your 4th bottle," I said,"You're not getting any more until you tell me why."
Her face tightened,"I don't have to tell you anything. And I don't have to take this."
She went for the door but I blocked it,"I'm not letting you drive home drunk."
"I'm not drunk-god you're such an asshole." She tried for the door again but I pushed her away,"FUCK Nick! Let me go home!"
"I'm not letting you go so you can get hurt even more! Why don't you just stay here for the night?"
"I want to go home!" She started throwing a tantrum,"NICK! LET ME GO! I WANNA GO HOME!"
"Why do you wanna go back to that asshole so bad? If he hurts you and makes you feel like shit? Why do you keep letting him hurt you if he's not worth shit!?"
"Cuz he's all I have left!" She stopped fight me and fell to her knees,"He's all I have left.."
"What do you mean Amaya?"
"Everything about my old life is gone and he's all I have left."
"He's not the same guy, Amaya." I rubbed her back in attempts to comfort her. It only made her cry harder.
"I'm just hoping that my old dad will come back. And he'll tell me he loves me and hold me and tell me it's ok to cry...that it's ok to talk about her..."
I hate to see her like this. Underneath that scowl and sarcasm, is a sad lonely girl that's struggling to keep her family together. Ever since her mom left she's been like this. Her dad treated her as if she was trash and the people at school bullied her.
"He's not gonna change, Amaya." I held her close so she could hear my heartbeat. I've heard that it's calming.
"I know."
"And I know it hurts."
"Like hell."
"I miss her too."
"I miss her...so much."
I felt her start to shake again,"You don't have to hold back your tears. You can cry."
And she did. She let out a massive ugly cry. I just held her and let her soak up my shirt.
I know how it feels to hold something as big as that in. How it just makes you feel worse.

I felt her falling asleep so I woke her up and took her inside. Amaya, now awake, got her emergency duffel bag from under the guess bed. She went to the bathroom and locked the door. I heard the shower going and went to my room.
My twin sister Nikki was there waiting for me,"She gonna be ok?"
I shrugged,"Hard to tell."
"I heard about what happened," Nikki held up an ice pack,"You were so busy worrying about her, you didn't dress your own wounds."
I touched my swollen eye,"I forgot."
"We can't keep doing this Nick," Nikki dabbed the alcohol on my cheek,"we're gonna have to report him."
"I know but I feel like this is something she should do. Besides if I did it she would never forgive me."
"That's what you said last time," when I didn't answer she said,"Shes your best friend. She should understand that you were just trying to protect her and if she does drop you then it's her loss. Because she'd lose someone amazing....Nicolas, what's more important: your friendship or her safety?"
