Sitting there staring at the crisp hospital bed was almost as bad as torture. We had been waiting for three hours for the verdict. I was now lying down on the floor with my head in Tyler’s lap; it was just like we had been lying a few hours ago. But then everything had been fine.

Becca’s big green eyes were still overflowing with tears but now Louise had come back to sooth her. She was worried sick, she wouldn’t move from her spot on the floor.

When Becca had finally managed to tell us we had been in shock at first because one minute he was giving me boy advice then the next…

I thought back to when she had told us.

Her eyes were all wet with worry and he lip was pouted; when she opened her mouth a sob only came out instead of words.

“It’s fine Becca; we know you can do it.” I told her smiling. She swallowed before finally telling us.

“I came in and sat on the bed next to him. We had a little moment where I told him I love him and he told me he loved me too. I was about to kiss him when he started shaking violently. Doctors came rushing in, doing all sorts of tests on my Brandon. I-” She began sobbing violently so I just wrapped her in my arms while rocking back and forth.

A few hours later a doctor came in with his clipboard ready.

“I believe you are the family of Brandon?” We all nodded not willing to explain our situation. “He’s going to be in surgery for a while I’m afraid. So far we think there is some swelling on his brain; probably from when he hit it off the floor. We don’t think it is that serious but there could be a chance of blood clotting. I’ll update you straight away if there are any changes.” He smiled before leaving us.

That was two hours ago and no one had heard from a doctor since. The only other life we had seen was a nurse asking us if we wanted some blankets and pillows.

It was now six in the morning so people were starting to wake up but I think the big night had tired Tyler out since he was now lying behind me. I needed to get up to use the bathroom but I didn’t for two reasons; one, Tyler’s arms were wrapped around my body so tight I wouldn’t be able to and two, I was comfortable.

But half an hour later when a doctor came in I jumped up as did Becca, while Tyler lay there snoring.

“Tyler, the doctors here.” He jumped up to at the thought of his brother.

“Right well he’s finally out of surgery but there is a slight complication. He has some blood clots on his brain that we didn’t realise before. Brandon will be back in this room in around twenty minutes but he won’t be awake.”

“When will he wake up?” Tyler interrupted.

“Let her talk Tyler.” I whispered while cuddling his arm.

“That’s a good question Tyler; the answer is we don’t know yet. It could be a day, week, month or unfortunately a year.” She looked like she didn’t want to finish what she started.

“Or never.” Becca breathed.

“That is unlikely though.” The doctor replied. She sent us our good luck before nodding and leaving.

“He’s going to die. Why do we have to go through this again?” Becca wailed.

“Don’t be silly Becca he’ll be fine.” I soothed.

“You don’t know that Charlie!” Tyler shouted. “You’re sitting there being little miss optimistic but the reality is he might not ever wake up!” Tyler had never shouted at me like this. Minutes ago we were cuddling sound asleep.
