I ran out of the window. Sophie. She was in front of the house. Closer. Closer to me. Closer to my longing. I knew I loved her. But what I wasn't so sure about? If she loved me back. I paced around the room in a daze. I furrowed my brow frustratedly. What if she and Fitz were on bad terms? Maybe if I just... talked to Sophie for a minute. That wouldn't hurt anybody, would it?

I sighed and sat down. I miss talking to her. She never comes here to talk anymore. I rubbed my face and wondered on what I would do next. Then Linh burst into the room, panting. She brushed a loose strand of hair from her face and signaled for me to wait for a minute. Then she looked at me. "Tam," she panted. "Sophie's at... Sophie's at the door." I didn't wait for her next words. I ran past her and dashed down the stairs.

Sophie was sitting on the couch, holding something up. I squinted. Her iPod. Tiny little buds were stuffed into her ears and she was nodding her head lightly. I sat next to her and cleared my throat. She looked at me for a second before removing the things and moving her hair out of her magnificent face.

She cleared her throat and I snapped out of my daze. She was looking at me intently; maybe even studying me. I waved my shaky hand in front of her face. She coughed. "Tam?" she asked quietly. My head snapped up and I replied. "Yes, Sophie?" I asked.

She sighed and I looked her straight in the eye. "Sophie, tell me." I said softly. She pulled her hands away from me and reached for her iPod. "What are you doing?" I asked. She popped on her earbuds and sighed contently. I was beyond "a little irritated" now, so I grabbed her iPod and decided to see what all the rage was about the little Dex-ified device.

Sophie reached for the main device and pressed something, and something clicked and played. It was strange, but nice. It was human music. Sophie's eyes looked like they were trying to tell me something, I just couldn't place what.

Suddenly, she took a deep breath and began. "Tam, listen to me this time! I was only talking to FITZ that time!" she cried. I sighed. "Fitz, huh?" I asked. She glared at me, but her eyes held another expression. Longing. Desperation. Desperate for me to understand. Desperate for me to love her back. I saw her sniff and she straightened up. "Tam, understand this. If you were forcefully pressed to do something, would you hide in the shadows for the rest of your life?" she asked challenging me. I shook my head angrily. "Of course not! Considering that I am a Shade, however, maybe. But no. I would kill them." I spat. She stared at me.

"No, I'm saying that I was trying to tell Fitz not to do that." she growled. I sighed and rubbed my face. "I'm sorry already, Sophie! Quit trying to make me feel worse than I already do." I said quietly. She looked at me and her face dropped. "Me. I'm- I'm making this worse? Look who's trying to make this so much worse than it already is!" she shouted, standing up. I stood up with her. "Sophie, I'm sorry. But i'm not sure anymore." I said, unsure of what I was saying. She looked at me, tears blurring her face.

"So you don't like me anymore, that's it." she said. My jaw dropped. "No, that's not at all what i'm saying-" "Well, it sure seems like it!" she screamed. I grabbed her shoulders. "Fine. It might seem like it. But I still love you, Sophie." I said, trying to calm her down. "Should I believe you? I honestly don't know if I can anymore." she whispered. I tightened my grip on her shoulders and stared intently into her eyes.

"Well, you should." I whispered, pulling her in for a kiss.
