I growled and stomped off back to Havenfield. What happened with Tam? I'll never know. I walked inside and slammed the door behind me. If I had not experienced being kidnapped and sedated for the twelfth time or something, I would've cowered at the sight of the serious faced Councillors sitting with a heartbroken Edaline and a grim looking Grady.

I glared at them all and without a second thought I stormed up into my room and tried hard to not to break down. I needed to be tougher, stronger. I sighed and sat down. What is with Tam? He's going crazy? No. I shook my head. I doubt it. I thought. I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples. I was severely worried about him. Nothing was wrong. Right? I tried to assure myself. Was it working? Not so much. I groaned out loud.

Was he going crazy? Nah. Throw that thought away. Is he being controlled? I sat up straighter. There is a possibility, though... But who would do that? Pretty sure there aren't a lot of  Mesmers around... I thought. But if the Neverseen got their hands on one? I rubbed my face with cupped hands. That would be chaos. Pure chaos. I sighed and rubbed my temples. I was getting a headache.

I stood up and decided to apologize to everyone for being so rude downstairs. I nervously walked downstairs, and saw Edaline and Grady hugging and the Councillors were talking to them. I cleared my throat and everyone looked at me. "Miss Foster." Councillor Bronte said with a serious poker face. I nodded and did a weak curtsey, and I was pretty sure Oralie was trying not to smile. I fingered the hem of my tunic.

"I'm sorry for being rude earlier." I said with a sigh. Everyone looked around with approval clouding their thoughts clearly. "Where have you been, Miss Foster?" asked Councillor Terik. I gulped. Uh... what should I tell them? I looked around and everyone was looking curious. "I... um..." I stuttered. I cleared my throat. Uh, wait, I got it...

"Well, I got taken..." I began. Edaline gasped and covered her mouth. "I'm so sorry, Sophie, we should have been there with you..." she started. I looked at her with a pleading look that said, not now. She nodded. "Someone went behind me and sedated me." I pretended to almost cry for added effect. "And... I woke up with a man in front of me... Neverseen symbol was seen on his cloak sleeve..." I muttered. Everyone had a grim expression plastered in their faces. Grady's mouth was pressed into a tight line and I averted my gaze and stared at the floor.

"Then... someone came and saved me, I don't know who." I added quickly. Councillor Emery, who I hadn't noticed was here, stood up from his seat. "We shall discuss this later." he said, shooting glances at everyone. His gaze intensified. He's having a telepathic conversation with everyone else, I realized. I nodded wearily and sat down. They all walked out and Edaline, Grady, and me were left there.

After a few moments of silence, Grady spoke up. "Sophie, are you alright?" he asked. I nodded plaintively. "I should be." I muttered. He nodded and Edaline sighed. "I wasn't doing my job. You're our daughter now. It's our job to protect you. I completely neglected that. So I'm sorry..." she apologized. The way she said it made me warm inside, but the way she also added "You're our daughter now" just hurt.

I walked over to them and hugged them. We stayed like that for a couple of minutes before I broke away. "I'll just-go up to my room now." I said, voice cracking. They nodded and I shot upstairs. I sank into the edge of my bed and covered my face with my hands. My hair was cascaded around me, covering my face so nobody would see me. But I was crying. I was scared, honestly. It was like the constant heartbeat of mine.

Scared for Tam.

thump

Scared for myself.

thump

Scared for everyone I knew and loved.

thump

Scared for...

Us.

I wiped my eyes, and, determined to stay strong, walked out the door. Edaline and Grady gave me worried glances as I passed through the front door. I rose my crystal up to the light.

"Alluveterre."

Little did I know, what I saw would be a burden to me for a long, long, time...
