Medusa is a gorgon female with living venomous snakes in the place of hair. Gazers upon her face would turn to stone. She is the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto. she lived and died on an island named Sarpedon, somewhere near Cisthene.
Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus who thereafter used her head, which retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield.
Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden, but because Poseidon had raped her in Athena's temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa's beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.
