She would live with Samantha Linens. That was probably the best thing that ever happened to her! There was only one thing bothering her: Everything she owned was at her house. Maybe it was dumb, and she didn't really care about what people would think about it, but she couldn't sleep without her favorite stuffed animal, an orange cat named... Orange.
Yeah, it was a stupid name and Kayla knew it, but she was two when her now-dead grandma gave Orange to her, so she was two when she named it. Her parents had tried, without any success, to give Orange away, but Kayla wouldn't let them. In her defense, it was a really nice looking and soft stuffed cat, but, obviously, her parents didn't agree.
Kayla took a huge inspiration and told her parents the problem:
''Mom, Dad... Orange! Orange is at the house, and I can't sleep without... you know, Orange!
-Well, Kay-love, said her mom, you will have to learn to sleep without Orange.''
Kayla scowled. She hated it when her mom did this thing aldults do when they find a way to make what you want look stupid and childish.
''I have slept with Orange since I was two! C'mon!
-Exactly, you're now ten, and if you want us to take you more seriously, you will have to make efforts, like sleeping without this little toy of yours, jumped in her dad.
-That's not fair, you two are against me, Kayla said.''
Then she pointed her dad:
''And you always agree with Mom!
-That's why we're here to support her, said Jem. ''
He was listening to the conversation the whole time.
''You know this is a private conversation, right? Asked Kayla's mom.
-Yeah, but it's in my house, said proudly Samantha.''
Kay's parents angrily left the room, leaving the Kay and her four friends, who had apparently overheard all the discussion, alone. Her parents agreed to take Kay at the house, but no one else could go, and they made that clear. After all, Jem, Sam, Leo and Ethan weren't their kids.
At her house, Kayla felt tears prickle her eyes. She wouldn't see this house for a long time. Even though it had just started, she hoped dearly this weird and complicated mess would soon be solved. For the first time since a really long time, she was waiting for school to start, so she would be far from the crime scene, she would be bored and she wouldn't think about everything that was going wrong in her life.
Because nothing was going right. She just wanted to have the perfect birthday, but, instead, she and her friends got stuck in this deadly nightmare.
As she stepped through the door, she saw Lidia, the police officer, with Orange. She froze. What was that girl doing with Orange?
''Hey! Give it back, she shouted to Lidia.
-It could maybe be proof!
-Woah! That's my Orange, and it was never in the crime scene! My house and my stuff are mine to play with, so you, find another playground!''
Kayla shouted this with so much anger, Lidia dropped the stuffed cat because of the surprise, letting time for Kay to dive towards Lidia, stealing Orange. Lidia shouted something sounding like '' Hey, come back, you monster!'' Then, she mumbled ''Ugh, I hate kids so much! '' Kayla simply answered that it was funny, because, sometimes, she found adults pretty annoying.
